#1 – FRIED CHICKEN AND BISCUITS at ROBERTA’S PIZZA

My very first excursion on the Time Out Top 100 list was pretty easy. Since I’m still technically working on finding the best pizza in NY, I was relieved to see that there are five pizzerias featured. It’s always nice to kill two birds with one stone.

And speaking of birds, the selection from Roberta’s Pizza in Bushwick was not pizza at all (although we tried their pizza and I wrote a whole separate entry on that here), but good old fashioned fried chicken.

It had been years since I’ve had fried chicken, but I better get used to it again since the list is also littered with this southern comfort. Roberta’s was their highest rated version since it appears in the Top 10 at number 9.

The skin was so crispy and salty and heavenly that the first bite brought me back to childhood. The chicken itself was incredibly moist and flavorful. It was served with awesome buttery biscuits and collard greens with specks of sweet bacon throughout.

Pizza and fried chicken? Doesn’t get much better than that. One down – ninety-nine to go!

Would Roberta’s fried chicken make my Top 100 of the year? It’s hard to say at this point, but the chicken was moist and the fried skin was dangerously addicting. It gets a 7 out of 10.
