Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

This one has been a long time coming. I am so excited to finally unveil the first episode of a new webseries I have been working on.

It’s pretty obvious to anyone that lives in New York that you can travel around the world with just a Metrocard. There are so many immigrant enclaves in this city where the culture and food is as authentic as can be. So I thought I’d make it my mission to try to travel the world without ever leaving New York. It’s a lot cheaper than buying a plane ticket, believe me.

In each episode of Around the World in One City, I’ll visit another neighborhood, food shops, sites, and restaurants with someone who is originally from that particular country. Until I have a show that lets me travel the world, I’ll make do with the diverse resources I have available right here.

For my inaugural episode, I meet up with Nick Karagiorgos, a friend of mine who happens to be the owner of Uncle Gussy’s food truck in Midtown. His family is from Greece and he grew up in the very Greek neighborhood of Astoria. He takes me on a tour of Titan Foods, where we learn about traditional ingredients and dishes. And then we end the day with a blow-out Greek meal at Gregory’s 26 Corner Taverna.

Check out the adventure below and if you happen to live in New York, you can do it yourself. I love this city!!

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Food Cart Tour is my exploration of the hard-working vendors feeding NYC’s population every day.

Today most New Yorkers think of street meat as being Halal, but if you lived in NYC in the 70’s and 80’s, or you happen to frequent the east side of Midtown, you know it’s all about the Greek. Uncle Gussy’s is a big blue truck that draws long lines in the same spot the current owner’s uncle did 40 years ago. And when you sample their meat platters, you understand why.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Food Cart Tour is my exploration of the hard-working vendors feeding NYC’s population every day.

Last week, Village Voice hosted their annual Choice Streets festival where over 20 of New York’s best food trucks gather on the Intrepid to serve up a tasty dish.

I encountered some favorite old vendors (like Nick from Uncle Gussy’s), some fellow food enthusiasts (like Street Grub Steve), a spiked Kelvin slush, and a very full belly!

Now that I’ve eaten my way through somebody else’s list (Time Out New York), I’m ready to compile my own 100 spectacular things I’ve tasted in 2012. Look for another five dishes every few days.

NUMBER 80: CUBANO SANDWICH at BONGO BROTHERS

On the food cart tours I run for Turnstile Tours, I constantly reiterate the surprising diversity of carts and trucks these days. You can get just about anything you could imagine (and some things you couldn’t imagine) from a mobile food vendor – everything from schnitzel to jerk chicken to Chinese-Indian fusion. And every year a plethora of new trucks bring the unexpected to the streets.

Bongo Brothers arrived last year with lots of style and authentic Cuban food. Their pressed Cubano was one of the better versions I’ve tasted with a nice balance between the two types of pork (ham and roasted), sharp melted swiss cheese, tangy pickles and mustard. The warm toasty bread offers a secure, but crusty way of enjoying this authentic sandwich. Cuban street food in New York? Check! Price: $9

I made another holiday video with Midtown Lunch and this time I brought my mom. I thought we should check out Uncle Gussy’s, a wonderful Greek food truck run by two brothers and their mom. Check out the video below to see the crazy shenanigans that occurred with dear old mom.
