Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

FOSTER SUNDRY, 215 Kinckerboxer Avenue (at Troutman Street), Bushwick, Brooklyn

I never rest – even on Thanksgiving. Maybe because especially on Thanksgiving there is a lot to eat. And I spent the last week trying to find some amazing dish that would be appropriate for the big day’s Dish of the Week.

In previous years, I found some great turkey burgers and turkey sandwiches. That would be the obvious thing, but this year I accidentally stumbled upon a sandwich that was crazier than I could even imagine.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

In New York, we have artsy and diverse neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Astoria, and the Lower East Side. They are incredible places. But I wish we had the colorful and food-centric enclave called Kensington Market. That one is in Toronto.

Since it’s adjacent to the city’s Chinatown, it makes sense that Toronto Urban Adventures hosts a tour of the two neighborhoods together – Kensington Market & Chinatown. It’s a great way to explore the awesome street art hidden down secret alleys, meet some of the locals who populate the bohemian area, and get a sense of which restaurants and food shops are the ones to visit.

Watch the newest episode of Locals Know to see what the tour is all about and then get more info about it by clicking here. Toronto is a very quick plane ride away and if you’ve never been or it’s been a while, you owe yourself at least a weekend away. It’s a really cool town!

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

MISCELÁNEA, 63 East 4th Street (between Bowery and Second Avenue), East Village

For most people, it’s not so difficult to find time to eat lunch between 11:30am and 4pm. Unfortunately, I’m not most people. And so I kept missing the sandwiches at the new Mexican provisions shop Miscelánea. They closed their kitchen at 4pm.

I had been by a number of times trying to get some food, but I was always too late. One afternoon I found myself in the East Village and I needed some sustenance. That’s when I realized I had ten minutes to get myself to the little shop on 4th Street. (more…)

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2015…

Matzo Ball Soup at PECK'S

One day I’ll probably do a search for the best matzo ball soup in NYC. And after checking out Peck’s, a specialty food shop focusing on Jewish specialities, I already have a head start. This version is both new and traditional. The richly flavored (clearly homemade) chicken broth houses some carrots, celery, plenty of dill, confited chicken, and a perfect pillowy toothsome matzo ball.

Fresh Mozzarella at ALLEVA DAIRYAlleva Dairy is one of the city’s gems. Among the touristy red sauce joints in Little Italy, the authentic Italian shop has been making fresh mozzarella daily since 1892. The large cheeseballs are as clean, fresh, and buttery as anything you can expect to sink your teeth into. Wrapped around a salty piece of prosciutto, or on a piece of toast with sundired tomatoes, this cheese is absolute perfection. Price: $7.99/pound

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

ASTORIA BIER & CHEESE, 35-11 Ditmars Boulevard (between 35th and 36th Street), Astoria, Queens

I remember a few months ago before the second location of Astoria Bier & Cheese opened on Ditmars, I passed by a few people on the street who saw the sign announcing the beer store’s opening and they expressed their doubt. “Beer and cheese don’t go together.”

Well, hopefully now that the beer and cheese pairing has been underway for a few months, there are no more doubts about the two foodstuffs perfect marriage.
