BREADS BAKERY, 18 East 16th Street (between Broadway and Fifth Avenue), Union Square

I was not expecting to visit Breads for my official cheesecake search. This is an Israeli-owned bakery known more for their breads, rugelach, and babkas than cakes. But this past summer they celebrated cheesecake month and focused on making a different cheesecake dessert each week.

Beautiful Breads

The month-long celebration has ended, but it caught my eye and I discovered that they make a year-long cheesecake. Turns out their unique take on the classic rivals many of the old time Italian bakeries in the city. (more…)

Checking Out the Cheesecake

It’s strange writing a conclusion for cheesecake because I feel like I already did that. A few months back, I was asked to write an article for Gothamist about the best cheesecakes in the city. It sped up my journey and I kind of feel like I can now send people to that article when asking where the best is in the city.

But I still should have some sort of conclusion on this site. And so here it is.

S & S CHEESECAKE, 222 West 238th Street (between Broadway and Review Place), Kingsbridge, Bronx

Picking up a cheesecake from S&S is a little like a scene from the Mission: Impossible series. Taking the subway all the way up to Kingsbridge in the Bronx is an adventure unto itself. But then making it inside the bakery is daunting.

I was eager to try this much-lauded cheesecake and I had called to confirm they would be open. You can’t reach an actual person; only an answering machine that says they are open for pick-up weekdays and Sundays until 3pm. I had arrived on a Thursday a little bit after 2pm. The gated door was not terribly welcoming. It almost looked like the business had shuttered. And the door itself was locked.

JEAN DANET PASTRY, 7526 5th Avenue (at 76th Street), Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

Bay Ridge must be the bakery district. In a matter of a few blocks in this diverse Brooklyn neighborhood, you have a Greek pastry shop, a French one, an iconic Scandinavian one, and one hailing from the Middle East. That’s a lot of eclectic and delicious treats in a small radius.

VENIERO'S PASTICCERIA, 342 East 11th Street (between First Avenue and Second Avenue), East VillageBefore the world of Twitter and food blogs, I discovered a heavenly little old-school pastry shop on 10th Street. It had been there for over a hundred years so it was not much of a discovery, but I stumbled upon it myself. For me, it was my discovery. And they had the most wonderful cookies and cannolis. It was a true Italian gem in the East Village and it belonged to me.

That was never the case, but I liked to think it did. Nowadays anybody who considers themselves a true New York food obsessive has been to or at least heard of Veniero’s. I don’t feel cool any longer.

FAIRWAY MARKET, 2127 Broadway (at West 74th Street), Upper West Side

I never thought it would come to this, but I’m about to review a supermarket on this blog. Albeit the supermarket in question is a New York born company that is dedicated to the community and still a family-run business. In a way Fairway is truly iconic to New York. And it’s still only in the metro area with no more than 15 locations (at the moment).
