ON THE ROAD: New York System at Olneyville New York System

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. On the Road has me traveling the country searching for the most iconic and local dishes.

In Rhode Island, there is a very strangely named hot dog. And all the locals have been going crazy for it for decades. Except, it’s not called a hot dog. It’s called a hot wiener. And the topping of celery salt, onions, mustard, and spiced meat sauce makes it a New York system. The systematic way of making these veal and pork sausages was brought to Rhode Island by Greek immigrants via NYC – hence the unlikely name.

I had my first sample of the light and spicy dog at Olneyville New York System, where the locals go at all hours and gobble down three at a time. Makes me want to be a local!
