Come back on Wednesdays for more funny, informative videos documenting my inept food adventures. In Around the World in One City, I travel around the world and taste authentic dishes without ever leaving New York.

I have been sitting on this video for a while. A few things have gotten in the way and stalled me. First off, I am entrenched in another exciting project that took me to Europe this summer. The videos from that will be live soon. I’m excited to share them with you.

Secondly, one of the restaurants featured in this video closed due to rising rents in Greenwich Village. When I first learned the news, I wasn’t sure if I should re-film or edit it out or what. So I sat on it.

But when the political climate reached sweltering this past week with unconstitutional immigrant reform, I realized just how important these videos are. Especially since Iran was named as part of the Executive Order.

You’ll also note that in the video I decide to not discuss politics. That was well before this current situation. If filmed today, I would have taken a bigger stand about the importance of this culture and its gracious people here in the United States.

But I still do want to focus on the food because as Saeed Pourkay says in the video, it can “do nation building.” So enjoy this video about a sadly underepresented cuisine and a now opressed culture. If you have never tasted Persian food, you really don’t know what you’re missing and it’s more important now then ever before.

On this episode, I first meet Saeed Pourkay who has followed his passion and is running a successful steam table in the corner of a generic pizzeria in the Flatiron District. The food is homemade and you can taste it in every bite. Then I head downtown to meet Shiva Stein, a British-born woman of Iranian decent who resides with her family in Brooklyn. We have a lovely meal at the sadly closed Cafe Nadery, modeled after an all-day artist hangout in Tehran. Transport yourself to Iran and get to know the people and its food as I go Around the World in One City.

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2015…

I have such fond memories of eating some wonderful dishes in 2015. But these five were so surprising and hugely delicious, that they stand above all the rest. While I still can taste their flavors in my mind’s palate, I can’t wait to truly try them again.

NUMBER 5: KASHK BADEMJAN at TASTE OF PERSIA

In the coming weeks, I will be releasing a video all about Persian food in the city and it will feature Saeed Pourkay talking about his incredible dishes. My favorite at his hidden counter inside a non-descript pizzeria is the kasha bademjan. For those unfamiliar with Persian food (or Farsi), this is a delicate, richly flavor eggplant dish. The browned eggplant is sweet and nutty; its flavors enhanced by lots of garlic, onions, and an amazing thing called kashk (drained sour yogurt whey).

I had some really great burgers this year, but the one that I crown as the best was the modest little creation available at Bar Sardine in the West Village. I even send tourists to this local spot to get a taste of the flattened potato roll filled with an excellent chuck and brisket patty. It’s topped with smoked cheddar, frizzled potato strings, and a sweet/smoky barbecue mayo. Crisp, crunchy textures shine alongside the complex juicy flavors. And it’s rightfully named king of the burgers. Price: $13

Food tour groups go up and down Bleecker to the usual spots, like Murray’s Cheese and Amy’s Bread. But they never wander down Morton Street to try the best French pastry in the neighborhood. Unassuming Bosie Tea Parlor offers a full-on tea service and pastries to go. However you get it, make sure to try the canelé – with a dark caramelized crust that breaks open to reveal a soft, eggy vanilla-scented cake. Price: $3

It’s rare that a chef re-invents and reinvigorates the classic pastrami sandwich. But Will Horowitz has gone above and beyond at his new butcher and sandwich shop. The place specializes in smoked sandwiches and nothing is better than the pastrami. It’s as tender as anything from Katz’s with layers of smoke, pepper, and meaty goodness in each bite. The brilliant combination of pickled cucumbers, tangy mustard, and fresh dill separates the sandwich from the usual Jewish deli construction. Price: $17.50

NUMBER 1: HONEY BUTTER CHIPS at OIJI

The most exciting meal I had all year (at Oiji) was capped off by a plate of potato chips!?! These incredible, unique bites are listed as a side but are served as a dessert. The freshly fried potato slices are glazed with, yes, butter and honey. There’s also a surprising dusting of cayenne pepper to give the dusg a slightly, smoky, savory note. No question, though, they are an indulgent sweet, rich capper to an exquisit meal. And I literally could not stop popping them in my mouth. They are something I will think about long after 2015 has come to an end. Price: $6

I have been completely seduced by Persian food this year. Keep your eyes peeled for a video all about my adventures discovering this aromatic cuisine. My favorite place to eat it is at Taste of Persia where every dish is intoxicating. Always on the menu is the deeply flavored ash reshteh, a bean stew with noodles, spinach, and lots of unique spices. It’s topped with kashk (similar to a yogurt) and lots of crispy garlic and fried shallots. Once you taste it, there’s no going back.

Where is this amazing Persian food I’m about to tell you about? Well, it’s actually in a little nook just near the window of the pizza place and it’s at this tiny rented space that Saeed Pourkay is introducing passersby to one of the greatest cuisines in the world.
