My search for the best beer in New York continues….

Everybody wants to be from Brooklyn these days. It may just be the hippest place in the world. It’s so cool, trendy, and unique that a few years ago The Brooklyneer opened up in Manhattan serving food and drinks from the neighboring borough to the south. You can get every other type of cuisine in Manhattan – from Ethiopian to New Englad – so why not Brooklyn cuisine? (more…)

The day will come that if you walk in to any independently owned Brooklyn restaurant, you will find a beer brewed just for them by Sixpoint. In a span of a week, I was at two of Brooklyn’s hottest restaurants for a meal and discovered that they both had a special beer that you could find nowhere else. Talk about local and exclusive. But also pretty cool.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard the word “resin” outside of referring to leftover bits of marijuana. And when Sixpoint released one of their newer can offerings and named it Resin, I assume it referred to the fact that the hop flower is closely related to the cannabis plant. And maybe there is some of that going on in the complex minds of the Sixpoint brewers. But the real definition of the word resin is a complicated scientific term that refers to a compound (often liquid) that comes from a plant. Think sap.

I’m completely oblivious when it comes to sports. I didn’t even know who was playing in the Super Bowl until the game started this past Sunday night when I was convinced to attend a small party. And to show you how much I paid attention to the game, after the Giants won, I asked which color uniform they were wearing. Seriously. I’m a total moron.

All the breweries in Brooklyn take risks with their beers. Brooklyn Brewery does some interesting brews with their Brewmaster’s Reserve Series, using wild yeasts or special honey or maple syrup. Kelso has been aging their regular beers in different types of barrels (whiskey, wine, sherry, etc.) to give a new spin to an old favorite. And Coney Island invites home brewers over the summer to test out a new concoction (like Cardamom Porters and Korn Dog Kolsch). But Sixpoint certainly gets the award for being the most experimental and borderline gimmicky.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

My life is laden with indecisiveness, so when places make it easier for me to not make a decision, I truly appreciate it. Keg No. 229 was both difficult and easy for me. I had a $2 off coupon from the NYC Craft Beer Week passport, it also happened to be Happy Hour here (which means half off all draft beers), and there was one more affordable option. Which option to take advantage of??

I had visited Keg No. 229 in the past right after my Financial District food cart tour. I really like this place. Every time I’ve come (granted, it’s always been around 3:00) it’s been empty, feeling homey and upscale. I’m sure that changes right around 5:00 when all the business people from the nearby Financial District are looking for a watering hole.
