Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

When I stopped by Dudley’s to grab a quick healthy bite, I didn’t think I’d be writing about it on my blog. In fact, I ended up getting the food to take away because it would have been a much longer process if I sat in. So I was really wanting something quick, simple, and on-the-go.

I was intrigued by the Crispy Rice Salad and when I got it in my to-go container, I almost didn’t even take a photo of it because I didn’t think it would be anything to write home (or a blog post) about. Oh, how wrong I was! (more…)

Smoked Whitefish Salad at MAIDEN LANE

Maiden Lane is trying to demystify the stigmas of eating fish from a can or a tin. They have bars just like this one all over Portugal and Spain where you can make a three-course meal from preserved sardines, mussels, and octopus. I love that they’re doing this here and I urge you to pop open a tin over a craft beer. But as a nice entryway into the world of preserved fish, try Maiden Lane’s excellent whitefish salad as an open-faced sandwich. It’s creamy and mildly salty and works wonders with cucumbers, pickled onions, and capers. Price: $12

Roasted Chicken 'Chimi' Salad at NUM PANG

Num Pang is known for their meat-heavy Cambodian-style sandwiches. And they’re great with cilantro and pickled vegetables on a buttery baguette, but I discovered that the flavors are just as bold and unique in salad form. I’ve been addicted to their chimchurri-glazed chicken salad this entire year. On top of bean sprouts, peppers, peanuts, and cabbage, the moist thigh meat is hearty and delicious and only enhanced by the sweet tangy dressing. Price: $10.95

June Salad at SWEETGREEN

The star of this now unavailable salad at popular chain Sweetgreen was the dressing, a special collaboration with Momofuku chef David Chang. Hozon is a fermented seasoning similar to miso paste, but its made with sunflower seeds rather than soy beans. The tangy and smooth dressing would brighten up anything it touched.

Rojak at PASAR MALAM

Fruit salads usually instill a sense of fear, but the Malaysians do it right. This crazy salad is a savory and sweet bowl of crunchy fruit and vegetables (pineapple, green mango, jicama, apple, and cucumbers) tossed alongside slices of fried bread that are softened by a tangy dressing of shrimp paste and textured with peanuts and sesame seeds. Price: $8
