Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

MU RAMEN, 1209 Jackson Avenue (between 48th Avenue and 47th Road), Long Island City, Queens

Mu Ramen has been high on my list (perhaps at the top) of restaurants to try since they opened last year. What started as a secret pop-up in a bagel shop by a former Per Se chef turned into a serious ramen destination in Long Island City. For some reason, I could never get to the restaurant during dinner hours and stories of long lines kept me away.

Finally I found myself in Queens at the 5:00 opening hour and so I proudly walked into the swanky Japanese restaurant and made myself comfortable at the bar. But here’s where things get really ironic. After all this time, I didn’t even order the ramen!!!

HOUSE OF INASAL, 65-14 Roosevelt Avenue (between 67th Street and 65th Place), Woodside, Queens

For most of us in this country, this has been a tough week. Half of the country is completely destroyed by the election results and all the anxiety leading up to it. This is not a political blog so I am not going to talk about all the ways to get involved and work on making changes – but those ideas are out there.

When I feel miserable, the first thing I do is indulge in food or drink. Makes me feel better. And I imagine that’s true for most people.

So this week, I recommend heading out to Queens for one of the most decadent and delcious desserts I’ve had in a long time.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Around the World in One City, I travel around the world and taste authentic dishes without ever leaving New York.
peru-working

I first fell in love with Peruvian food like most people do, through tasting moist, tender rotisserie chicken. But that is such a small part of the wide variety this incredible cuisine has to offer.

On the second episode of Around the World in One City, I get as close to visiting Peru as possible. My friend Pedro Alarcon, who I met years ago when we both worked at Apiary, is from the rainforest areas of Peru and is the perfect guide to introduce me to such dellicacies as anticuchos, tiradito, and leche de tigre. We start with some hearty breakfast dishes at Broadway Bakery before finishing with a well-balanced feast at Urubamba.

From coast to mountains to jungle, the food of Peru is widely diverse and satisfyingly delicious. I was lucky enough to have a chance to visit the country itself this past year and I can assure you, if you don’t feel like hiking up Machu Picchu, hiking to Queens is the next best thing. Save yourself some calories and check out the adventures below.

TITO RAD'S GRILL, 49-10 Queens Boulevard (between 49th and 50th Street), Woodside, Queens

Tuna is a fish I usually associate with Japanese nigiri, packed and canned, or lightly seared at a cheesy Pan-Asian restaurant. But I recently discovered that when the belly is marinated and grilled, it is a popular Filipino dish.

This was my first visit to Tito Rad’s Grill, a slightly hidden restaurant in Woodside, a number of blocks away from the congregation of Pinoy businesses known as Little Manila.

Despite its out-of-the-way location (or perhaps because of it), this is a popular spot for large gatherings and for people to try out some Filipino delicacies they have never experienced before.

This is where I tried fresh lumpia (the fried version is quite different) and the fresh wrapped crepe stuffed with vegetables was surprisingly light and tasty. It’s also where I discovered the Filipino use for the chicken of the sea.

My search for the best hot dog in New York continues….

IMG_5320

Smorgasburg completely overwhelms me. I often stop by at the weekly Brooklyn food festival for a quick cheap bite before one of my tours. But it’s never quick and never cheap. It takes me a long time to navigate the crowds and find something interesting to eat in a sea of overpriced and predictable food vendors. (more…)

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

This one has been a long time coming. I am so excited to finally unveil the first episode of a new webseries I have been working on.

It’s pretty obvious to anyone that lives in New York that you can travel around the world with just a Metrocard. There are so many immigrant enclaves in this city where the culture and food is as authentic as can be. So I thought I’d make it my mission to try to travel the world without ever leaving New York. It’s a lot cheaper than buying a plane ticket, believe me.

In each episode of Around the World in One City, I’ll visit another neighborhood, food shops, sites, and restaurants with someone who is originally from that particular country. Until I have a show that lets me travel the world, I’ll make do with the diverse resources I have available right here.

For my inaugural episode, I meet up with Nick Karagiorgos, a friend of mine who happens to be the owner of Uncle Gussy’s food truck in Midtown. His family is from Greece and he grew up in the very Greek neighborhood of Astoria. He takes me on a tour of Titan Foods, where we learn about traditional ingredients and dishes. And then we end the day with a blow-out Greek meal at Gregory’s 26 Corner Taverna.

Check out the adventure below and if you happen to live in New York, you can do it yourself. I love this city!!
