I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

Steakhouses are tough in this city. And they should be medium rare. What I mean is, they are so expensive that it’s only possible for a special occasion (unless you are one of the lucky elite). Quality Eats is one of the few places I can regularly visit for steak and their food is actually really good. I’ve been three times now and my favorite is the charred hanger steak which comes with interesting pickled and grilled onions and a delicious bowl of corn brulée. Price: $27

A thickly sliced bacon appetizer is pretty standard at American steakhouses. But Quality Eats turns that on its head. The smoked cured meaty pork belly is fantastic but its what’s around it that really causes a stir. The meat sits on a rich sauce of crunchy peanut butter sauce and is topped with a sweet and peppery jalapeño jelly. It’s a twist on both the steakhouse specialty and our childhood lunches. Price: $17

The new Quality Eats is not a steakhouse. At least that’s what they’d like you to believe. The restaurant group wanted to separate their new casual neighborhood restaurant from their Midtown beef behemoth named Quality Meats.

But there is still a knowing wink to their comfortabilty with steak. The logo and menu (both with a crossed out or muted letter “M”) are designed as if somebody assumed the place would be a steakhouse and then at the last minute, they broadened (and economized) the menu. (more…)
