I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

I thought the concept at Pig Bleecker was pretty ingenious. As far as I know, it’s the first restaurant to take components and techniques from American BBQ and incorporating them into other more refined dishes. Some dishes worked better than others, but by far the most successful were these delicate plump ravioli stuffed with tender smoky brisket. What you would not find at most pit houses is the addition of truffle butter and a sweet and acidic barolo reduction. Price: $24

SAN MARZANO, 117 Second Avenue (at East 7th Street), East Village

There was a time in New York when you could get a cheap (and I mean cheap) dinner of well-cooked pasta and sauce. That time is mostly gone.

Even one of my old favorites, Supper, which is a super casual but solid osteria and wine joint have risen their prices to a still fair $13-$17 per pasta.

Of course times have changed, but not everybody’s income has changed with the raising rents and food costs. So I was mouth-gapingly shocked when I saw that every single pasta on San Marzano’s menu was $9.

Cavatelli at MEADOWSWEET

Pasta seems so simple, but when you get a perfectly composed plate (no matter how small), you realize you can’t underestimate the difficulty in execution. Meadowsweet has proven they are a serious neighborhood restaurant with excellent food this year. Their homemade pastas rotate seasonally, but when I visited I was lucky enough to taste their rich and delicate cavatelli which soaked up the juices from fatty braised oxtail and was balanced by a tangy, herbal blanket of ricotta cheese. Price: $16

BAR PRIMI, 325 Bowery (at East 2nd Street), NohoMy newest scheme is to visit some of the hottest restaurants in New York City at lunchtime. I’m often free after my tours, hungry, and these places are much easier to get into at lunch, sometimes the prices are even lower, and the lighting for my food photos is far superior.
