I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

Steak tartare is one of those dishes that seems to be difficult to innovate. But Israeli chef Meir Adoni has reinvigorated the dish to an artful plating that is flavorful and filling enough for a main course. The hand-cut beef is earthy and meaty which plays nicely with an artist’s palette of colorful ingredients like smoked eggplant cream, tangy sheep’s milk yogurt, pine nuts, grated tomato, and too many other ingredients to name. Price: $26

All Hail, Falafel!

I underestimated the modest little falafel. I was expecting some great things, sure, but I was also anticipating lots of dry and dense chickpea balls. Greasy, soggy, and mealy were words I used very rarely in my falafel reviews. Of course, I stuck with the most renowned and popular falafel spots in the city. I’m sure terrible falafel is out there somewhere, but we’re also blessed to be rolling in the good stuff.

My search for the best falafel in New York continues….

KING OF FALAFEL & SCHAWARMA, 29-18 Broadway (at 28th Street), Astoria, QueensIt’s easy enough for a business to call themselves the king. The King of tires, the king of beer, the king of burgers. It’s a marketing gimmick, of course, but it’s amazing how people tend to believe the royal decrees.

King of Falafel is one such incredulous title, but Freddy Zeideia has proven to much of the food world that he does indeed deserve the designation. He’s built up a kingdom of followers at his food cart in Astoria, he won the Vendy Award in 2010, and he’s expanded his regime to a food cart in Midtown. When it comes to falafel, there’s nobody else that can really wear the crown.
