Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Brewery Tour explores the growing craft brewery scene in the city and visits all the unlikely spots that are brewing fresh, delicious beer.

Perhaps the most well-respected and popular of all the breweries that have opened in New York in the last few years is Other Half. The owners, Sam Richardson and Matt Monahan, are brewing geniuses and make some of the most coveted hoppy and sour ales. In such a short time, they’ve earned a reputation for being one of the most exciting breweries in the country.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

OTHER HALF BREWING COMPANY, 195 Centre Street (between Hamilton Avenue and Smith Street), Carroll Gardens, BrooklynOf the dozen or so breweries that have opened in NYC in the last few years, the one that has probably become the biggest hit is Other Half. It’s the only one that has fully gained notice beyond the food and beer scene. The excitement feels much the same way Sixpoint did when it first debuted back in 2004. And it took another 9 years for another brewery (Other Half) to debut in Brooklyn.

Much of the excitement over Other Half has to do with their hop-centric beers. Brewmaster Sam Richardson is a wiz with the hops, having learned the art of fermentation in his hometown of Portland, Oregon and then working in New York at Greenpoint Beer Works for many years. This is his own project (with trained chef Matt Monahan) and he proves just what a beer genius he is.

ONE MILE HOUSE, 10 Delancey Street (between Bowery and Chrystie Street), Lower East Side

American craft beer drinkers go crazy for IPA’s. The old British-style is much more aggressive and bitter than anything the mass-produced guys have been brewing for decades in this country.

OTHER HALF BREWING

So it makes perfect sense that Other Half Brewing has been focusing on different versions of IPA’s. The stronger and hoppier, the better.

Each Friday, I get a lesson in the NYC brewery scene in these funny and informative videos promoting Urban Oyster’s NYC Brewery Tour

For years, I’ve been leading the Urban Oyster Brownstone Brooklyn tour in Carroll Gardens. I’ve become somewhat of an expert on the neighborhood, especially in the world of food and drink. However, as you will see on Episode 3, when a tour attendee asks me a question about the latest brewery, I’m at a loss.

Meredith steps in, steals my thunder, and brings the entire group to Other Half Brewing Company on the outskirts of the neighborhood, where they’re brewing some mighty fine, hoppy beers.

THE JEFFREY, 311 East 60th Street (between First and Second Avenue), Upper East Side

For years, I used to hang out in that strange neighborhood in the shadow of the Queensboro Bridge, Just around the high 50’s and low 60’s on the east side. Some call it the Upper East Side, some call it Sutton Place, some even still call it Midtown. I was there all the time because I worked at two different restaurants in the neighborhood and the nearest subway stop (at 59th and Lexington) was my subway stop back home to Queens.

Back then, we hung out at local dive Irish bars and ate at take-out sushi restaurants. There was nothing even remotely as cool as The Jeffrey.
