I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

I really loved my meals at Fish Cheeks this year. Surprisingly there are not one or two dishes that made this list but three, The Coconut Crab Curry is probably the one that has gotten the most attention for its fieriness. I thought it was rather spicy but it was the complex bitter, herbal notes (from betel leaves) and the plentiful delicate sweet crab meat that really made this dish sing. It’s balanced with some creamy coconut milk and a boatload of other exotic spices. Price: $22

The thought of an avocado margarita might not be the most appetizing, but when its made with smoky mezcal, lime juice, cucumbers, and a spicy chile bitters, you get a complex sweet/tart/spicy/refreshing cocktail that is a real game-changer. The avocado adds a rich creaminess that ensures this balanced quaff fires on all cylinders. Price: $15

When I am feeling under the weather, I run to the nearest Thai restaurant and order their spicy and sour tom yum gong soup. Clears things right up. The trendy Fish Cheeks is far from a take-out joint and their communal soup is one of the best versions I’ve ever tasted. The milky shrimp broth is loaded with delicate flavors from mushrooms, chiles, galangal, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves. It’s quite spicy, nicely funky, and completely restorative.. Price: $22

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

It’s fitting for my last Dish of the Year for 2016 to be a surprising and bold dish. All the food at Fish Cheeks is full-on. The new and ultra-trendy Thai restaurant is much more than it seems. The food is from a young Thai chef who is focusing on seafood dishes from around Thailand.

A specials board also lists a promise: “No Pad Thai Zone.” This means you can be assured that the food is authentic and quite spicy. (more…)

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

Last year, I helped design a tour for Urban Adventures that has been a huge success (if I do say so myself). It involves cocktails, so how could it be bad?

I lead the tour pretty regularly but we have about three other guides that also do a great job with it. So on the latest episode of Locals Know, I experience the New York Craft Cocktail tour from a brand new perspective thanks to Josh. Watch the video below to get a sense of the tour and watch us discover hidden bars, new speakeasies, and drink a whole lots of well-crafted cocktails.

Restaurants come and go so quickly in this city. I never got to Five Points, which was a neighborhood favorite in Noho, but I’m pleased to see that it’s replacement, Vic’s, is more than capable of filling its shoes. Vic’s has an Italian-leaning menu with a little something for everyone (pizza, pastas, vegetables, etc.).
