I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

I love bubble tea as much as the next guy but I don’t really indulge very often because it can tend to be ovely sweet and too milky for my tastes. That’s until I discovered Boba Guys, the California import that are making their own tapioca balls and allowing you to customize everything from sweetness level to types of milk. Price Varies.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

GALERIA, 43 Clinton Street (between Stanton and Rivington Street), Lower East Side

If you like your trendy rice bowl so much, you can even take it home with you. Because in addition to the food, the bowls are also for sale at Galeria. This light breezy Brazilian café moonlights as an art gallery and a showroom. It’s very funky and artsy with an interesting menu.

Just as IKEA serves Swedish meatballs for obvious reasons, Galeria concentrates on Brazilian food. I’ve been intrigued by their tapioca sandwiches and wowed by their brigadeiro chocolate truffles. But what’s really made an impression on me here is their acaí bowl. (more…)

My search for the best pizza in New York continues….

MELANI PIZZA, 170 Rivington Street (between Clinton and Ridge Street), Lower East Side
At some point I realized there was no way I’d be able to visit every single pizzeria in the city – although others have tried. So I’ve been more selective with my pizza reviews focusing on places that could actual fit the bill for the best pizza in the city.
Best Late at Night
Places like Melani probably won’t win any awards so they have fallen off my radar. Except I needed something to eat quickly one day in the Lower East Side and I noticed Melani’s clean, well-designed M logo and before I knew it, I had a slice of their pizza in my face.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

Of all the tours I lead, the one I have been giving more often than the others is the Tenements Tales and Tastes tour for Urban Adventures. It makes sense that this would be the one that people would want to take on their first visit to New York. Everyone can relate.

The tour, just like this city, is the story of the immigrants that came through to make this country what it is today. That includes customs, languages, but also food. And it’s the food that takes the focus on the newest episode of Locals Know. My guide Joe walks us through the Lower East Side from old Dutch New Amsterdam through Chinatown and Little Italy and then we end in Kleindeutschland with a German pretzel and beer.

There are old-school pizzerias and then there are old-school pizzerias. Scarr’s harkens back to a different time than the city’s oldest pizzeria Lombardi’s when Italian immigrants were cooking tomato pies in old coal ovens.

Scarr’s is reminiscent of a time not that long ago (I hope) when I was a child – the 1980’s and it’s crazy to use that in the same sentence as the world old.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

KIKI'S, 130 Divison Street (at Orchard Street), Lower East Side

For years I stopped eating potato chips at home and started eating vegetable chips, convincing myself that fried slivers of carrots and beets were somehow healthier. I like to fool myself like that.

I’ve moved past that naiveté and found another healthy crunchy at-home snack: cashews. No question they are better for my heart, but come on, we all know how delicious fried crunchy slivers can be.
