I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

For Thanksgiving dessert, I popped open a bottle of Big Alice’s ambitious beer that is aged in used gin barrels. Granted this was a lot drier and more savory than I imagined with layers of sweetness and bold balanced acidity. Probably not the best beer to pair with dessert but when the beer is this good, I almost decided to forgo dessert and just drink this.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

MU RAMEN, 1209 Jackson Avenue (between 48th Avenue and 47th Road), Long Island City, Queens

Mu Ramen has been high on my list (perhaps at the top) of restaurants to try since they opened last year. What started as a secret pop-up in a bagel shop by a former Per Se chef turned into a serious ramen destination in Long Island City. For some reason, I could never get to the restaurant during dinner hours and stories of long lines kept me away.

Finally I found myself in Queens at the 5:00 opening hour and so I proudly walked into the swanky Japanese restaurant and made myself comfortable at the bar. But here’s where things get really ironic. After all this time, I didn’t even order the ramen!!!

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Brewery Tour explores the growing craft brewery scene in the city and visits all the unlikely spots that are brewing fresh, delicious beer.

You don’t need to hike all the way out to the beach to get a taste of some great beer. Rockaway Brewing Company did start out in the Rockaways (and their beer continues to be offered out there), but their physical brewery is in a much more manageable Long Island City locale. Their beers are fresh and accessible and are perfect for people who want beer to “taste like beer”.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

LIC BEER PROJECT, 39-28 23rd Street (at 40th Avenue), Long Island City, Queens

Long Island City Is the place to be if you want to explore the New York craft beer scene. No other neighborhood (at this point) has as large of a concentration of breweries and beer bars. I’m sure the attraction comes from the large industrial buildings leftover in this neighborhood and the close proximity to Manhattan. The scene is so alive in Long Island City that the four breweries have put together an unofficial walking brewery tour that enables people to hit all four in one day.

LIC is the Place to Be!

The only one I had yet to visit is the newest one, but I remedied that recently. LIC Beer Project opened earlier this year and now has a small tap room with lots of space for expansion.

SMORGASBURG QUEENS, 43-29 Crescent Street (between 44th Road and 43rd Avenue), Long Island City, Queens

I’ve been going to the Smorgasburg in Brooklyn for years now and each time it’s more and more maddening. The crowds are frustrating, the prices are too high, and much of the food is not as good as it used to be. Smorgasburg in Queens is a whole different world.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

ROCKAWAY BREWING COMPANY, 46-01 5th Street (at 45th Avenue), Long Island City, Queens

When I list the number of new breweries in the city, people are always shocked to hear that Queens holds the highest number: 8 currently in operation. There is so much love and excitement for beer in the borough that Queens even has its own weeklong festival of local beer.
