Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Being an adventurous eater in New York, I’ve eaten food from many different cultures and countries. We have (just about) everything in this uareat diverse city. But sometimes I realize just how much I have never tried, There’s literally an entire world out there.

I recently learned about a Paraguayan restaurant in Queens and became immediately interested. We have plenty of Ecuadorian, Brazilian, and even Uruguayan restaurants, but this would be the first time I have ever tasted specialities from the small Latin American country of Paraguay.

LALI RESTAURANT, 630 Tenth Avenue (between West 45th and West 46th Street), Hell's Kitchen

I have been wanting to come out to try Lali Restaurant for quite a while now. But the little Dominican counter is located pretty far west in Hell’s Kitchen and is only open for lunch. The odds of me being in this neighborhood at this time have been against me since I first heard about them over a year ago.

But fate finally struck. I had a special private tour that started at a Hell’s Kitchen hotel in the mid-afternoon. So I knew exactly where I was going to get lunch.

My search for the best hot dog in New York continues….

Smorgasburg completely overwhelms me. I often stop by at the weekly Brooklyn food festival for a quick cheap bite before one of my tours. But it’s never quick and never cheap. It takes me a long time to navigate the crowds and find something interesting to eat in a sea of overpriced and predictable food vendors. (more…)

Pollo at MALECON RESTAURANT

Some modern restaurants get much acclaim for their tender, juicy chicken. But in the Latin American world, certin old-school rotisseries have mastered the poultry. Malecon up in Washington Heights is one such establishment, where the incredibly moist chicken with crispy browned skin and a side of spicy green sauce. Any of the sides will work, but I especially like the mangú (mashed green plantains). Price: $10.50 (with side order)

Coconut Yuca Cake at COLONIA VERDE

After a debilitating fire, Colonia Verde jumped back into the game earlier this year and cemented itself as one of the best standby restaurants in Brooklyn. This gluten-free coconut yuca cake is irresistibly moist and tropical. It’s topped with some housemade whipped cream and a balancing garnish of lime zest. Served in a cast iron skillet, it’s warm and not too sweet.

I am so spoiled living and eating in this city. I used to be afraid to order roast chicken when going out to dinner at a nicer restaurant. Not anymore. But now I have certain expectations that the chicken will be soft, juicy, and tender, which are not words always associated with poultry. You can almost always judge how good a chef is by their chicken. And we have lots of good chefs in this city.
