It’s strange writing a conclusion for cheesecake because I feel like I already did that. A few months back, I was asked to write an article for Gothamist about the best cheesecakes in the city. It sped up my journey and I kind of feel like I can now send people to that article when asking where the best is in the city.
But I still should have some sort of conclusion on this site. And so here it is.
My search for the best corned beef/pastrami in New York continues….
Jewish delis have a certain look about them. Usually they’re bright with old photographs on the wall and lots of nostalgic kitsch. I was surprised when I walked into Loeser’s (one of two remaining delis in the Bronx). Behind the take-out counter was a makeshift dining room with a dark dingy feel to it. It definitely has that stuck-in-time vibe, but something was missing. I have yet to put my finger on it, but it didn’t feel like most Jewish delis. (more…)
My search for the best cheesecake in New York continues….
Picking up a cheesecake from S&S is a little like a scene from the Mission: Impossible series. Taking the subway all the way up to Kingsbridge in the Bronx is an adventure unto itself. But then making it inside the bakery is daunting.
I was eager to try this much-lauded cheesecake and I had called to confirm they would be open. You can’t reach an actual person; only an answering machine that says they are open for pick-up weekdays and Sundays until 3pm. I had arrived on a Thursday a little bit after 2pm. The gated door was not terribly welcoming. It almost looked like the business had shuttered. And the door itself was locked.
My search for the best beer in New York continues….
I really plan out my food adventures. I’ve been wanting to visit Bronx Alehouse for years now. It’s the holy grail of craft beer in the entire borough. Problem is, I rarely make it up to the Bronx. So when I realized it was right next door to S&S Cheesecake and Loeser’s Delicatessen was a few blocks way, I decided to make a pilgrimage. Pastrami, cheesecake, and beer all in one trip? Welcome to my life!
