Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Brewery Tour explores the growing craft brewery scene in the city and visits all the unlikely spots that are brewing fresh, delicious beer.

Most New Yorkers have never heard of Greenpoint Beer Works, but oddd are they know the names of the beers that this commerical brewery produces. This is the home of Heartland Brewery’s production facility and also the place where Kelso and Cuzett Libations are made. It has only recently opened up a tasting room to the public and it’s a great place to see how beer is made. We often visit them on our Private NYC Brewery Tour.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

PINE BOX ROCK SHOP, 12 Grattan Street (between Morgan Avenue and Bogart Street), Bushwick, Brooklyn

Ah, the power of persuasion. I remember laughing hysterically during the film Sideways when Paul Giammati’s character exclaimed he smelled asparagus in the wine. The pretension and specificity was absurd. Of course, I stopped laughing when one day at a pre-shift meeting at The Modern, I too smelled green vegetables in my wine. Did that happen because those aromas really existed in the glass or did I smell it because the wine director suggested I would?

The beer world uses similarly surprising aromas to explain how a beer smells and tastes. But after tasting my way through many different styles, it’s not too far off. Beer can smell like chocolate or grass or pepper or bananas or even smoke.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

I don’t like to do what everybody else does. So when I go to a wine bar, I turn my nose up at all those Cabs and Syrahs and instead I ask, “What’s on tap?”

That can now be a loaded question since many bars and restaurants are actually putting wine on tap. And I would think most people who order from the tap at the downtown location of Terroir are indeed drinking their popular Gotham Project Riesling. But Teroir Tribeca also has five impressive craft beers for people like me who want to cause trouble.

This one has been a looong time coming. And it is finally here! The latest webisode is co-produced by Urban Oyster and co-stars co-founder and resident beer expert David Naczycz. Now through the end of June, we’re offering 20% off tickets to any of their beer related tours.

Brian begins training to give beer tours with David Naczycz from Urban Oyster, but  he gets distracted by a new scheme that could win him lots of ladies.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

I can officially say 61 Local is my new hang out. We’ll be hosting the premiere of the beer episode tonight at 7pm at this wonderful new public house in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn because their community ideals are very similar to what I try to do in finding iconic local food and their upstairs private event space is pretty awesome. I had peeked my head into the bar on a very busy Saturday night once, but never spent much time here. Thankfully, that’s all about to change.

As of this writing, I’ve been there 4 times in one week. First was to check out the place and taste some beer. I’ll get to those in a minute. The next was to interview Dave, the owner, and Kris, the event manager in anticipation of the Neighborhood Eats Tour, the latest tour I’m giving with Urban Oyster. Then I brought a group by on my inaugural tour. And yesterday I visited in the morning to do a sound check for the big night. If you come by tonight, you’ll understand why this is the kind of place you’ll want to visit again and again.

Here’s one more teaser for the premiere event on Wednesday, May 9 at 61 Local. The three brewers who are featured in the video (Anderson Sant’anna De Lima, Kelly Taylor, and Garrett Oliver) discuss the importance of craft beer. Everybody pay attention! And come to the event on May 9. It’s free, so there’s really no more excuses.
