All Hail, Falafel!

I underestimated the modest little falafel. I was expecting some great things, sure, but I was also anticipating lots of dry and dense chickpea balls. Greasy, soggy, and mealy were words I used very rarely in my falafel reviews. Of course, I stuck with the most renowned and popular falafel spots in the city. I’m sure terrible falafel is out there somewhere, but we’re also blessed to be rolling in the good stuff.

My search for the best falafel in New York continues….

BEDOUIN TENT, 405 Atlantic Avenue (between Bond Street and Nevins Street), Downtown Brooklyn

A Bedouin tent is a convertible structure usually made of goat or camel hair that allows nomadic people to stay safely and comfortably in the desert. It’s also the name of a restaurant in the cozy neighborhood of Boerum Hill. As far as I know, Boerum Hill is nothing like the Arabian desert.

But in the back of this seemingly small, crowded Jordanian-owned restaurant, lies a hidden dining area with colors and images that could convince you that you were in fact dining inside a Bedouin tent. If it weren’t for the sirens and traffic outside. And while the service was lackluster and lazy, the excellent Middle Eastern food is made to be savored.

My search for the best falafel in New York continues….

BA'AL CAFÉ AND FALAFEL, 71 Sullivan Street (between Broome and Spring Street), SohoOnly in New York could you walk into a Middle Eastern restaurant and have the cashiers and cooks speak to each other in Spanish. It actually made me a little concerned about the autenticity of the falafel at Ba’al Cafe. Based on my research, this place is Jordanian owned and I don’t know much about Jordan but I don’t think they speak Spanish there.  If the menu didn’t say otherwise, I might have been tempted to order a taco.
