I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

We have breweries and distilleries in the city, but Barow’s is making something else – a liqueur. They use a sugarcane spirit and then infuse it with tons of carefully sourced ginger. The result is a bold sweet and spicy liqueur that is perfect in cocktails or as an easy-drinking digestif. Ginger after all is good for the stomach so let’s think of this as an elixir.

Nestled pretty far out in Industry City, Extraction Lab got a bit of press this year for selling an $18 coffee. I did not try that. But I did get a demonstration of a few coffees on their futuristic Steampunk coffee brewer. The coffees they serve rotate so you can choose from the few they have on offer that day – sometimes you’ll find local roasters like Nobletree or the award-winning La Cabra from Denmark. Their machine is customized to get the brew of each coffee just right for the maximum flavor experience. Price Varies.

Li-Lac makes some incredible chocolate from peanut butter cups to mint bars, but the most addicting thing I tried at this chocolatier from 1923 were the butter crunch bits. Not as overly chocolatey as other offerings, these are by far the most addicting. The milk chocolate hugs buttery almond toffee and then is covered with a dusting of almond. I seriously dare you to eat just one… or two.

My search for the best pickles in New York continues….

I stumbled upon Brooklyn Brine was I was exploring the huge manufacturing and food facility known as Industry City. I had been out here years ago to make a video on Robicelli’s Cupcakes but that was back when these factories were not open to the public. A few years ago, the site expanded and opened many of its doors. In fact, I’ll now be leading tours of the area.
There’s now a food hall, a distillery (and two breweries), an area called Innovation Alley, and the new home of Brooklyn Brine. This is one of the most well-known and hip local pickle companies and I tried to get there earlier on in my pickle journey. But they had closed their Park Slope facility and restaurant before I could visit for inspection.
I was pleased to see they have moved their entire facility and opened a new pickle café right here in Industry City. I was in luck.
