Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

The newest food court to open in the city (there will probably be a new one by the time you read this) is an extension of Gotham West Market but now in Brooklyn. These are all new vendors and the strangely named Spatchcocked Chicken was so good it got me all spatchcocked (whatever that means!)

Price: $10/$17/$32

Leave it to me to visit one of the best new speakeasies and not even have a cocktail. I studied the menu and watched the bartenders work their magic at Karasu, hidden behind the local restaurant Walter’s, but I didn’t order a drink because I was on my way to give a tour (and I try to stay somewhat sober for those). But I came here to check out the place (which is awesome) and have some dinner.  The food, like the cocktails, are Japanese-inspired. And the softly breaded and incredibly tender fried chicken pieces with dipping sauces almost makes up for the lack of alcohol. Price: $11

ChickenShack at SHAKE SHACKThis was the year of the fried chicken sandwich. People waited in line for David Chang’s version at Fuku, barbecue restaurants started frying up fowl, and Shake Shack introduced a brand new non-burger item. The ChickenShack is only available at their Brooklyn locations and is a golden fried breast that is juicy and seasoned perfectly. It’s served on a buttered Martin potato bun and topped with buttermilk herb mayo. It’s an excellent alternative to the chain’s overly popular burgers. Price: $6.29

Coconut Yuca Cake at COLONIA VERDE

After a debilitating fire, Colonia Verde jumped back into the game earlier this year and cemented itself as one of the best standby restaurants in Brooklyn. This gluten-free coconut yuca cake is irresistibly moist and tropical. It’s topped with some housemade whipped cream and a balancing garnish of lime zest. Served in a cast iron skillet, it’s warm and not too sweet.

I am so spoiled living and eating in this city. I used to be afraid to order roast chicken when going out to dinner at a nicer restaurant. Not anymore. But now I have certain expectations that the chicken will be soft, juicy, and tender, which are not words always associated with poultry. You can almost always judge how good a chef is by their chicken. And we have lots of good chefs in this city.

Chicken Liver Mousse at PROSPECT

It comes out looking like a bowl of chocolate soft serve and this chicken liver mousse is just as decadent. Softened and creamy, the smooth texture is unbelievable and the rich flavor has hints of sweetness with a garnish of candied walnuts for crunch. Spread this on toast with some pickled shallots and you’ll quickly forget you ever wanted an ice cream sundae. Price: $11
