Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

This one has been a long time coming. I am so excited to finally unveil the first episode of a new webseries I have been working on.

It’s pretty obvious to anyone that lives in New York that you can travel around the world with just a Metrocard. There are so many immigrant enclaves in this city where the culture and food is as authentic as can be. So I thought I’d make it my mission to try to travel the world without ever leaving New York. It’s a lot cheaper than buying a plane ticket, believe me.

In each episode of Around the World in One City, I’ll visit another neighborhood, food shops, sites, and restaurants with someone who is originally from that particular country. Until I have a show that lets me travel the world, I’ll make do with the diverse resources I have available right here.

For my inaugural episode, I meet up with Nick Karagiorgos, a friend of mine who happens to be the owner of Uncle Gussy’s food truck in Midtown. His family is from Greece and he grew up in the very Greek neighborhood of Astoria. He takes me on a tour of Titan Foods, where we learn about traditional ingredients and dishes. And then we end the day with a blow-out Greek meal at Gregory’s 26 Corner Taverna.

Check out the adventure below and if you happen to live in New York, you can do it yourself. I love this city!!

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

I just returned from an amazing trip to Peru. And while there, I had to meet up with the local branch of the tour company I work for, Urban Adventures.

Just like here in New York, the guides at Urban Adventures in the capital of Lima get you away from the touristy areas and into a local neighborhood. On the Lima Discovery Tour, you are able to have one-of-a-kind experiences like chatting with locals, exploring the vibrant markets, and sipping an iconic pisco sour in the hotel that created it.

Get a flavor of the tour in the video below and learn more about it here. Anyone planning a trip to Peru?

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

IVAN RAMEN SLURP SHOP, Inside Gotham West Market, 600 Eleventh Avenue (between West 44th and West 45th Street), Hell's Kitchen

We know Jewish people love to eat Asian food, but did you know Asian chefs love to incorporate one specific Jewish food into their dishes? I’m talking about everybody’s favorite smoked meat: pastrami.

At least in New York, chefs from funky hip Asian restaurants seem to use pastrami as a meat substitute any place they can. And it usually works wonders. I’ve had excellent pastrami egg rolls at Red Farm, super spicy kung pao pastrami at Mission Chinese, and now I’ve finally discovered Ivan Ramen’s pastrami buns.

My search for the best corned beef/pastrami in New York continues….

HARRY & IDA'S MEAT AND SUPPLY CO,, 189 Avenue A (between East 12th and East 11th Street), East Village

Of all the iconic foods of New York that I have documented, I think corned beef and pastrami is the one that is updated the least. We are immersed in fancy bagel and hot dog shops and we all know the world of pizza keeps growing. But it’s only once in a while that somebody comes along to elevate the humble Jewish meat sandwich. Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

Beyond Broadway is New York Urban Adventures’ newest tour and it’s the perfect one to document in the first episode of what I hope to be a long-running webseries.

All over the world, Urban Adventures tours are all about getting away from the touristy areas and putting down the guide books in order to get a true, local flavor of a city. At first glance, it almost seems impossible to make that local experience a reality in the overcrowded tourist-filled neighborhood of Midtown, but we show you it’s possible.

Check out the video below that documents a bit of the tour and learn more about it here.

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2015…
Smoked Trout at NORDIC PRESERVES, FISH & WILDLIFE COMPANY

This little stand in the Essex Street Market gives the nearby Russ & Daughters a run for their money. Instead of focusing on this neighborhood’s Jewish history of preserving fish, Nordic Preserves is catering to the city’s Scandinavian community. You can get all your Nordic supplies here and while you’re at it, you have to try the meaty, salty, and deeply smoky tour that they pull apart for you and sell by the pound.
