Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

If you read this blog, it’s no secret that I absolutely love The Vendy Awards. It’s a full day of eating such amazing diverse food on an island minutes away from Manhattan. But it’s also a celebration of the community and hard work of the vendors on the streets of New York. I’ve been attending this annual event for the last seven years and I guess it’s at that point when they ask you to host the entire thing.

I’m well-connected to the Street Vendor Project through my work with Turnstile Tours. We give food cart tours to educate the public on the hardships of street vending and we donate time and money to the advocacy work of SVP.

When they couldn’t get a celebrity emcee this year, they turned to the biggest star of all: me!

So it was pretty cool. I got to be on the mic, talk way too much, and announce the winners. I felt like Billy Crystal without the millions of people watching or the fat paycheck.

THE GOOD BATCH, 936 Fulton Street, Clinton Hill, BrooklynThe Vendy Awards is my favorite day of the year. For the last eight years, I have done everything in my power to attend the festival dedicated to the best street food in the city. Not only is it a full day of eating, but it’s a day to support the Street Vendor Project and their advocacy work in fighting for better laws and rights of street vendors.

I am very invested in the day for many reasons: a) I lead food cart tours for Turnstile Tours, b) we’re sponsors of the event, c) I believe in the cause, and d) the food is undeniably delicious. And in years past, I have spent weeks documenting the nominees through a series of videos.

But this year, because I was in Europe for most of the summer, I was not able to dedicate as much time to meeting and documenting the vendors and their businesses. In fact, going into the Vendy Awards, I was only familiar with a handful of the nominees. Which meant I had to eat from every single one of the 26 nominees in less than four hours.

This Friday, one of the biggest and most diverse food events is happening in Manhattan once again! Village Voice hosts the ninth annual Choice Eats and tickets are still on sale here. This event has always been a great and fun way to taste food from many new and classic restaurants in one place. More than 50 restaurants will participate, including Rosemary’s, Untamed SandwichesBara, and many more. Instead of spending Friday night restaurant hopping, you may as well check out this event since you’ll also get drinks, live music, and the chance to win prizes.

Village Voice's HOLIDAY SPIRITS

Yes, it is turkey day and I probably should have found some interesting Thanksgiving related dish to write about today. Something like this or this. But last week I had the pleasure to attend Holiday Spirits and I wanted to write about it before next Thanksgiving. Also, the spirit I chose will easily fit in on the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NY Craft Cocktail Tour explores the craft cocktail culture of New York from local distilleries to specialty spirit shops to amazing cocktail bars and speakeasies.

Last week, I got to board the Hornblower Infinity cruise ship for a taste of the best local spirits in New York courtesy of Village Voice. It was a fun and intoxicating event as over 25 distillers poured tastes of their products and also slipped them into some interesting cocktails. There was gin, bourbon, a fig spirit, vermouth, coffee rums, you name it. Mark your calendar now for next year’s event.

VILLAGE VOICE'S HOLIDAY SPIRITS

It hasn’t happened yet, but it will get cold in this city (unless global warming has changed all that already). And the best way to warm up during the cold season is, not with a coat, but with locally made spirits and cocktails.

Village Voice will be showcasing the exciting local distilling scene once again with Holiday Spirits on Thursday, November 19 beginning at 6pm. The event takes place aboard a Hornblower Cruise ship and will feature cocktails and tastings from over 25 drink makers, including Kings County Distillery, Van Brunt Stillhouse, and Jack from Brooklyn. Not to mention dinner, live music, and an actual cruise. The boat departs at just after 7:30 and sails around Lower Manhattan.

Tickets start at a very reasonable $55, which includes all drinks, food, and entertainment. Click here for more info and to purchase tickets.
