Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

When I was in Portugal last year, I had at least one (sometimes two) egg tarts a day. It’s just what you did. They were sweet, creamy satisfying yellow tarts with a crisp pastry shell and a browned top layer. And they’re a ubiquitous pastry on the Iberian penninsula.

The Portuguese love them so much that they brought them to their colony of Macau and the tarts quickly spread to Hong Kong and the mainland. Now you’ll find them just as often in certain parts of China and Chinatowns as you would in Portugal itself.

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2015…

Cod Fish with Fish Roe Dumpling at DUMPLING GALAXY

The shopping malls in Flushing are the best. You won’t find any generic fast food chains (no Chick-Fil-A or Sbarro) – only regional Chinese food. Dumpling Galaxy is one of my new favorites if only for the sheer variety of dumpling fillings (close to 100). The best I tried yet is the unusual cod with fish roe dumpling. The tender wrappers hide a soft butteriness from the fish and bits of pop from the roe. I found them to be sweet and rich with a delicate, clean finish. Price: $7.95

My search for the best falafel in New York continues….

NOAMI'S KOSHER PIZZA, 6828 Main Street (between 68th Road and 68th Avenue), Flushing, QueensEvery time I move on to another food journey, I turn to my readers to find out where they think the “best” version of this dish can be found. Before I even begin eating, I can usually predict the winners. But in the case of falafel, a realtively unknown little kosher pizzeria named Naomi’s won the poll by a landslide. This place is way out in Flushing, Queens nowhere near a subway stop yet it beat favorites like Taim and Mamoun’s by a landslide. It received close to 5 times more votes than any other falafel restaurant.

I wonder how this happened. Maybe Naomi’s launched a campaign for their customers to vote for them or perhaps I have a huge readership out in Flushing. Or maybe it’s more well-known then I gave it credit for. (more…)

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Food Cart Tour is my exploration of the hard-working vendors feeding NYC’s population every day.

The greatest day in mobile food vending is back. On September 12, the Vendy Awards will take place on Governor’s Island honoring the greatest in New York’s food vending community. Tickets are still available for purchase here. For the next few weeks, I’ll be documenting all of the nominees in three categories.

Rookie of the Year: Coney Shack

We have lots of Asian tacos in New York, but nobody is focusing on fusing the flavors of Southeast Asia with Mexican tortillas. Lawrence Mach has changed that with Coney Shack, his eye-catching truck that started in Coney Island and now travels all through Manhattan with his tacos, quesadillas, and hot dogs.

Dessert of the Year: Play J’scream What’s the biggest problem with soft serve? It inevitably drips down the cone and onto your hand, making clean-up a mess. The J-shaped cone was introduced in South Korea and is now making the rounds in New York via Play J’scream, where the corn-pop ice cream cones are both drip-free and gluten-free.

Market Vendor of the Year: Burmese Bites

I wish I had made it out to Queens International Night Market much earlier in the season. It’s a wonderful gathering of the international Queens community and features some of the most exciting and diverse food in the city. Burmese Bites sets up every weekend and offers up authentic dishes like palata (a hand-stretched flatbread with a curry dipping sauce) and shwe taung kaukswe (noodles tossed with chili and roasted bean powder).

My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

DUMPLING GALAXY, 42-35 Main Street (between Maple Avenue and Franklin Avenue), Inside Arcadia Mall, Flushing, Queens

For me, too many options are both a blessing and a curse. I am terrible at making decisions mostly because I want a little bit of everything. So you can imagine how overwhelming Dumpling Galaxy was for me.

Pages and Pages of Dumplings

The new Flushing restaurant has a menu of 100 different dumpling fillings. And frustratingly, they don’t offer a combo plate. So I had to choose between things like dried octopus and chives, curry beef, and egg with dill. Where to begin??

My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

TIANJIN DUMPLING HOUSE, 41-28 Main Street (at 41st Road), Inside Golden Mall, Flushing, QueensTianjin Dumpling House has been operating in Golden Mall for a few years now, but it’s only recently (once they changed their name) that they began to get as much press as their famous neighbors.

I am just as guilty as everybody else who visited the Golden Mall and skipped this kiosk (then called Xie’s Home Cooking). Sometimes it takes a few more adventurous food people than me to discover a stall where the language barrier is dense, but the food is universal. In the last few months, some blogs have called these the best dumplings in the entire city. Those are fighting words.
