My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

A friend of mine who lives in Pittsburgh recently asked me if I had ever had soup dumplings. He saw them featured on a television show and thought they sounded very interesting. Have I ever had soup dumplings??

I told him to look for a Shanghainese restaurant and that they should have them on the menu since Xiao Long Bao (I very obnoxiously told him the real name of this dish) are a specialty from Shanghai.

So knowing that China Blue, a spin-off of a very good Szechuan-focused restaurant in Midtown, concentrates on this regional Chinese cuisine and has even decked out the large Tribeca space to feel like Shanghai in the 1950’s (not sure how accurate it is since I was never there), I figured I should try their soup dumplings. My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

My life is so hard. I was putting together a private tour for a group that wanted to taste different international food in the East Village. The Tang was on the route and I already had a great meal of brisket noodles and excellent turnip cakes here.

I knew the turnip cakes would be a hit, but I thought it also made sense to get the group some dumplings. Problem was I never tasted The Tang’s dumplings. So one day, I had to order myself an entire order to test them out. For work. This is what I get paid for. (more…)

My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

Due to my job and my new family responsibilities, I don’t find myself out to dinner nearly as often as I used to. So I’m one of the few out here who waits until the newest restaurants start serving lunch. Lunch is usually my time to go explore now.

So I always get frustrated when a restaurant decides to limit their options at lunch or not offer the full menu. And I understand the difficulties of doing that at some of the top fancy restaurants in the city, but at the new casual dumpling spots? (more…)

MIMI CHENG'S, 380 Broome Street (between Mulberry and Mott Street), Nolita
Sometimes I’m wrong – believe it or not. Food blogging is not always precise and many factors weigh in to how I feel about a meal.

So while it’s not always possible to return to a restaurant (there’s always a new place to try and believe it or not, my funds are limited), I do like to sometimes try again at a place that was less impressive to me to see what I may have missed.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

ANTON'S DUMPLINGS, 320-338 Avenue of the Americas (at West 4th Street), Greenwich Village

One night after a Cocktail Tour, I was walking back to my train on 6th Avenue, searching for a quick bite to eat when I discovered a little cart I had never seen before. It was selling Russian dumplings. Yes, Russian dumplings! Now there’s a food cart option you don’t see every day in New York.

I got all excited that I had just made the newest food discovery in the city and everybody would be singing my praises for uncovering this hidden gem. Except once I did some research it turns out everybody and their mom’s food blog had already written about them.

Oh, well! That doesn’t mean that I can’t write about them too. (more…)

SHANGHAI ASIAN CUISINE, 14 Elizabeth Street (between Canal and Bayard Street), Chinatown

A few years ago when I was in the thick of my dumpling search around NYC, I paid a visit to Shanghai Asian Manor. I wasn’t overly impressed with their soup dumplings prefering the others around the neighborhood.

Small Little Storefront

Just recently I stumbled upon a storefront with a similar font and logo as Shanghai Asian Manor, this one with the name Shanghai Asian Cuisine. Turns out they are indeed related (although this used to have different owners). Figured maybe I should give the company a second chance. (more…)
