I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

Some people have heard about the gins or whiskeys made in Brooklyn, but many New Yorkers have no idea that there is a traditional Puerto Rican spirit being made in the Bronx. To make the pitorro, Port Morris Distillery uses a mix of brown sugar, corn, local honey, and New York gala apples. They make different infusions and aged versions, but the pure pitorro is perfect on its own – even at a dangerous 92 proof.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NY Craft Cocktail Tour explores the craft cocktail culture of New York from local distilleries to specialty spirit shops to amazing cocktail bars and speakeasies.

After a visit to Brooklyn Brewery, the next natural step is to walk a few blocks and visit New York Distilling Company. Here they give free tours of their facility, which has been producing different gins, rye, and liqueurs since 2011. It’s a beautiful space and even more exciting is that their bar The Shanty pours some mean cocktails. You can learn more about them and cocktail culture on our Craft Cocktail Tour.

VILLAGE VOICE'S HOLIDAY SPIRITS

It hasn’t happened yet, but it will get cold in this city (unless global warming has changed all that already). And the best way to warm up during the cold season is, not with a coat, but with locally made spirits and cocktails.

Village Voice will be showcasing the exciting local distilling scene once again with Holiday Spirits on Thursday, November 19 beginning at 6pm. The event takes place aboard a Hornblower Cruise ship and will feature cocktails and tastings from over 25 drink makers, including Kings County Distillery, Van Brunt Stillhouse, and Jack from Brooklyn. Not to mention dinner, live music, and an actual cruise. The boat departs at just after 7:30 and sails around Lower Manhattan.

Tickets start at a very reasonable $55, which includes all drinks, food, and entertainment. Click here for more info and to purchase tickets.

If you didn’t know, Red Hook might be the booziest neighborhood in Brooklyn. In addition to a winery, a brewery, some great bars, and an excellent wine store, there are three distilleries operating within a few blocks from each other. Van Brunt Stillhouse is the most traditional of the bunch. They are making a range of American whiskeys, an amazing rum made from sundried sugar from the Himalayas, and a range of grappas and vermouths. Best part is, they can mix their spirits into cocktails in their adjacent bar. Learn more about the local distilling scene on the Urban Adventures Craft Cocktail Tours that I lead.

In 2007, a law was passed called the NY Farm Distillery Act which has enabled small distilleries to open at an affordable price as long as 75% of their ingredients come from New York farms. Thankfully, this started an onslaught of new local distillers in the city. And it all began with Kings County which is currently in the historic Brookly Navy Yard producing some might fine bourbon, moonshine, and chocolate whiskey. We talk about them and others on the new Urban Adventures Craft Cocktail Tour.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Village Voice's HOLIDAY SPIRITS

It seems like the holidays come earlier every year. This year I noticed decorations and Christmas cheer starting in September. The Bryant Park Holiday Market even opened two weeks before Halloween!!

In my mind, you shouldn’t start preparing or singing carols until the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has ended. I know most retailers will disagree with me, but that’s not what the holiday spirit is about.

Another good indicator is that Village Voice has now thrown their newly annual Holiday Spirits event. Just like Choice Eats and Brooklyn Pour, this event celebrates the best of local food and drink purveyors. Here the focus is on warming spirits, wines, and cocktails.
