I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

Totonno’s should have been on a previous 100 best list, but it wasn’t until this year that I fully understood its greatness. I was unimpressed on my first visit many years ago, but goes to show variables can make me wrong. The pizza here is great and a true New York classic – thin chewy charred crust and a sweet tomato sauce tamed by a rich buttery tang from the globs of cheese. Price: $16.50/$19.50

First they did it with sodas, like Root Beer and Cream Soda. Now Coney Island Brewing Company has turned to famous cocktails to inspire their beers. The Hot Toddy is an unlikely beer style, but it works wonders. The strong ale (12.5% ABV) is fermented with honey, cinnamon, and lemons. It is then aged on whiskey barrel staves before being served hot or cold. Yes, it’s beer, but you’d be forgiven if you thought you were actually drinking a cocktail. .Price Varies.

I’ll be the first to admit that the major weakness of this blog is that the places I review only get one shot. With a few exceptions, it’s hard for me to visit a place multiple times before I make a decision about their food. The truth is there are just too many things to eat in New York City.

But in the last few months, I thought I should periodically re-visit some of the classic New York places that I’ve only visited once or twice. And update the reviews if need be. (more…)

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

CONEY ISLAND BREWING COMPANY, 1904 Surf Avenue (at West 17th Street), Coney Island, BrooklynMost people only go out to visit Coney Island in the summer. Very few actually see it when only the residents are around in the dead of winter. It’s a very different place. I kind of like it because it’s quiet and nostalgic as the shops and rides await the tourist season a few months away.

I’ve been out to Coney Island a few times in the freezing cold – most recently to visit the newest iteration of Coney Island Brewing Company. (more…)

Hot Dog Recap

It was no surprise that my hot dog search was littered with double entendres and childish snickers. And this post will be more of the same. Try to control yourself, if you can.

My search for the best hot dogs in New York continues….

I knew I had to go out to Nathan’s sooner or later on this hot dog journey but, the truth is, I was sort of dreading it. I’d need to ride the train for a good hour (no matter where I was in Manhattan) each way. And then when I got to Coney Island (the very last stop), I’d have to deal with crowds, heat, lines, etc. And while the thought of hitting this place up on July 4th (when they host their annual hot dog eating competition) sounded very American and festive, I’m not a glutton for punishment.

I usually go to Coney Island once a year just for the novelty, but I have never even remotely considered getting in line at the chaotic hot room they call Nathan’s. The one time I had a hot dog on Coney Island, I went to the more manageable boardwalk location. The masses stop immediately at the large signs and flashing lights just outside the subway station – at the original location which has been there since 1916 when Nathan Handwerker left his job at Feltman’s to surpass the popularity of his former employer.
