I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

SADLY, JOY LUCK PALACE IS NOW CLOSED.

Perhaps I fell for the cute, Instagram-friendly shape of these custard buns, but they were really my favorite thing at the dim sum meal I had at Joy Luck Palace. They are stuffed with a not-too-sweet egg custard and the pig faces themselves melt away into a texture somewhere between mochi and white bread. They’re both adorable and delicious.

My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

A friend of mine who lives in Pittsburgh recently asked me if I had ever had soup dumplings. He saw them featured on a television show and thought they sounded very interesting. Have I ever had soup dumplings??

I told him to look for a Shanghainese restaurant and that they should have them on the menu since Xiao Long Bao (I very obnoxiously told him the real name of this dish) are a specialty from Shanghai.

So knowing that China Blue, a spin-off of a very good Szechuan-focused restaurant in Midtown, concentrates on this regional Chinese cuisine and has even decked out the large Tribeca space to feel like Shanghai in the 1950’s (not sure how accurate it is since I was never there), I figured I should try their soup dumplings. Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

There’s not much I’ll wait in line for. Even for the hottest new spots in the city. I’ll let the over-eager Instagram crowd wait in line and I know that once the hype dies down, I’ll be able to sneak my way into the hottest spot and see what all the fuss is about.

That’s what happened with Tim Ho Wan, the Michelin-starred dim sum chain. When they opened earlier this year, reports suggested three hour waits for dim sum. That’s crazy – who has that time?

As I suspected, if I stopped by at 4pm on a random weekday afternoon months after they had opened, I’d be able to eat without a wait. And it’s true. I was in and out in less than an hour.

So now I see what the fuss is about.  (more…)


My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

My life is so hard. I was putting together a private tour for a group that wanted to taste different international food in the East Village. The Tang was on the route and I already had a great meal of brisket noodles and excellent turnip cakes here.

I knew the turnip cakes would be a hit, but I thought it also made sense to get the group some dumplings. Problem was I never tasted The Tang’s dumplings. So one day, I had to order myself an entire order to test them out. For work. This is what I get paid for. (more…)

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Sometimes it happens that the best thing you eat at a restaurant is the one thing you haven’t paid for.

That’s what happened on my recent meal at China Blue. This is the second restaurant from the team behind Midtown’s Café China and this one, in the far western reaches of Tribeca, focuses on specialities from Shanghai.

Just like the Midtown restaurant, it is designed beautifully with old 1930’s flourishes. And it seems like a real discovery – especially considering how far it is off-the-beaten path

I came here one day for lunch and was tempted by their lunch specials. Being a Shanghai restaurant, I had to also order the soup dumplings (which I reviewed in a separate post) and a dish called Soupy Rice which I have never encountered before. I was a bit underwhelmed by both dishes, but the thing that got me really excited and the reason I’ll be back to the restaurant were the complimentary baby cucumbers provided to whet my appetitie. I hope this doesn’t come across as ignorant or insensitive, but I have become very confused by the opening of a few new Chinese restaurants. Shorty Tang, The Tang, and Little Tong.

I was excited when I read that a former Smorgasburg vendor (Shorty Tang) would be bringing their classic noodles to Manhattan. And then I read about a former chef from WD-50 named Simone Tong who would be bringing Mixian noodles to the city. And then I walked by The Tang on First Avenue thinking it was at least one of these. But it was unrelated to the other two.

And all of these establishments opened within the last few months. Surely, you see my confusion. Which Tang/Tong is which?
