Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

2016 was a pretty sad year for the New York restaurant world. It seemed like every week another announcement revealed that an old standby or well-regarded food spot was closing – victims of astronomical rents or high labor costs or just plain bored chefs.

Carnegie Deli, Soto, Montmarte, Betony, Fritzl’s Lunch Box, and Pork Slope were just some of the great dining establishments we lost. But the saddest for me by far was Victory Garden.

I didn’t write enough about this goat milk ice cream business in the West Village. I think that’s probably because I was so busy enjoying it and always forgot to sit down and reflect. It was definitely the place I visited the most – after dinner, after work, on the way home. Whenever I could. The soft serve was simply divine and the flavors were healthy and surprising.

But unlike most of those other businesses, we haven’t completely lost Victory Garden. Thank the good Lord!! They will still be packaging their ice cream in pints at local grocery stores, summertime will bring an ice cream wagon, and their incredible soft serve is available (albeit in one flavor only) at a cool little stand at Chelsea Market.

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

This year the best taco purveyor in Manhattan (Los Tacos No. 1) opened a secret little side bar making the best fish tacos in the city. These guys are called No. 1 for a reason. Seafood reigns supreme here and their ceviche is top notch. Served on a crisp tortille and topped with fresh avocado, the bass mixture is bright, fresh, and completely satisfying. Price: $4

Doughnuts at DOUGHNUTTERYFor years, Doughnuttery has been quietly frying mini-doghnuts to order and tossing them with innovative flavored sugars (like lavendar/pistachio or coffee/banana/coconut). It’s all been happening in a corner of Chelsea Market and at a few food markets around town. I had no idea how amazingly these little hot, fresh balls of dough were until they got nominated (and won) for the Vendy Awards this year. MY visits to Chelsea Market will never be the same again (and neither will my waistline).

Roasted Chicken 'Chimi' Salad at NUM PANG

Num Pang is known for their meat-heavy Cambodian-style sandwiches. And they’re great with cilantro and pickled vegetables on a buttery baguette, but I discovered that the flavors are just as bold and unique in salad form. I’ve been addicted to their chimchurri-glazed chicken salad this entire year. On top of bean sprouts, peppers, peanuts, and cabbage, the moist thigh meat is hearty and delicious and only enhanced by the sweet tangy dressing. Price: $10.95

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Food Cart Tour is my exploration of the hard-working vendors feeding NYC’s population every day.

The greatest day in mobile food vending is back. On September 12, the Vendy Awards will take place on Governor’s Island honoring the greatest in New York’s food vending community. Tickets are still available for purchase here. For the next few weeks, I’ll be documenting all of the nominees in three categories.

Rookie of the Year: Old Traditional Polish Cuisine

There’s dozens of taco trucks, plenty of pizza vehicles, and a myriad of lobster roll wagons in this city. But there’s only one truck selling the hearty, traditional food from Poland. Pierogies and kielbasa make for excellent street food and Old Traditional Polish Cuisine is cooking them up with authentic flavors and straight from the heart.

Dessert of the Year: Doughnuttery

Evan Feldman had a brilliant new idea about doughnuts. At Doughnuttery in Chelsea Market or at Broadway Bites, he fries all his mini-doughnuts to order (on an invenive machine) and then shakes them up with uniquely flavored sugars infused with surprising ingredients like coffee, bacon, or purple potato chips. This makes for a magical, fresh, and addicting take on the usually ordinary fried dough.Doughnuttery

Market Vendor of the Year: Gumbo Bros.

At Madison Square Eats, you can find a range of food vendors, but the one to check out as the weather gets colder and you start craving hearty, spicy stews is Gumbo Bros. Started by friends and LSU alum Adam and Clay as a way to fill their gumbo craving, it’s one of the few spots in the city to get authentic, full-flavored Cajun food.

CERVEJARIA RAMIRO, Avenue Almirante Reis 1, Lisbon, PortugalThis website is dedicated to the foods of New York (hence the name). But I spent the last few weeks outside of the city (outside of the country, in fact) in the Iberian Peninsula. And just like I do at home, I spent most of my time eating local, iconic food in Portugal and southern Spain.
