I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

Before Denisse Chavez moved her Mexican operation to Brooklyn, she called herself El Carnitas El Atoradero. It makes sense now that I’ve tried her crispy pork carnitas because they are out of this world delicious. The fried meaty pig chunks are heavenly and the accoutrements (onion, cilantro, radish) and homemade tortilla it sits on are not even necessary. The pork can certainly stand alone.  Price: $4.50

As a kid, I was pretty averse to whitefish salad. As an adult, I realized how wrong I was. Or at the very least I had never tasted the stuff at Shelsky’s. The chunky meaty whitefish has an irresistible smokiness and creaminess. The fish pieces melt in your mouth and are nicely broken up by bits of crisp celery. Price: $5.50/quarter pound

Li-Lac makes some incredible chocolate from peanut butter cups to mint bars, but the most addicting thing I tried at this chocolatier from 1923 were the butter crunch bits. Not as overly chocolatey as other offerings, these are by far the most addicting. The milk chocolate hugs buttery almond toffee and then is covered with a dusting of almond. I seriously dare you to eat just one… or two.

I might be one of the last food people in New York to discover this dish. Missy Robbins opened Lilia last year in Williamsburg and all the food writers rejoiced. Most especially, they singled out this plate of delicately filled tubes of pasta. Each bite carefully revealed a rich center of luxurious sheep’s milk cheese. The addition of saffron and rehydrated sun-dried tomatoes was quite nice, but it was the addition of honey that puts this dish well over the edge. Price: $23

My first post on this site was for the still excellent pizzeria Kesté. This year they expanded big time with locations in both Williamsburg and the Financial District. And they also got a little fancier with a few new appetizers that were not available at the original Bleecker Street location. Since the pizza has already made my list in year’s past, I have to rave about this amazing little play on arancini. It is a rich ball of spaghetti with bits of ham, peas, and mozzarella. The original Italian fried mac and cheese. Price: $3.50

Leave it to hipster chefs to put an interesting spin on the bar snacks we know too well as chicken wings. Here they fry them and season them with a dry rub of za’atar spice. It gives it a distinct Middle Eastern vibe and when dipped in the labneh ranch and served with a side of pickles, it sings. And not your usual college football song. Price: $12/$17
