I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

For Thanksgiving dessert, I popped open a bottle of Big Alice’s ambitious beer that is aged in used gin barrels. Granted this was a lot drier and more savory than I imagined with layers of sweetness and bold balanced acidity. Probably not the best beer to pair with dessert but when the beer is this good, I almost decided to forgo dessert and just drink this.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Brewery Tour explores the growing craft brewery scene in the city and visits all the unlikely spots that are brewing fresh, delicious beer.

Not only is Big Alice creating some of the most unique and inventive beer in the city, but you can subscribe to their CSB (Community Supported Brewery). That means every two months you get two half growlers full of their seasonal beer. It’s always a surprise and always unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. If you’re a commitment-phobe, you can also head down to the brewery and get a flight of their five beers on tap.

White Coffee Stout from BIG ALICE BREWING COMPANY

One of the most interesting beers I’ve tasted this year, the White Coffee Stout is a bit of a misnomer but it’s certainly exciting. The blonde colored beer releases the same sort of roasty, coffee flavors you expect from a dark stout. Here, it’s both creamy and light while rich and sweet. It’s as exciting and mind-boggling as a Black IPA. Fun stuff.

Each Friday, I get a lesson in the NYC brewery scene in these funny and informative videos promoting Urban Oyster’s NYC Brewery Tour

I love the idea of a CSA (community supported agriculture). You sign up with a local farm and then on a regular basis you pick up a bounty of seasonal produce. You don’t know what you’re going to get, but it’s always fresh and makes for a surprising seasonal dinner.

Who knew the same idea existed with beer? Well, I guess Meredith did because once again she introduces me to a new local brewery. This time it’s Big Alice and they’re running a CSB with food-focused one-of-a-kind beers.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

BIG ALICE BREWING, 8-08 43rd Road (at Vernon Boulevard), Long Island City, QueensEverybody by now has heard about microbreweries. They’re the craft beer heroes coming to save us from the corporate commercial breweries in this country that have made our beer flat and bland for too long. But if you thought microbreweries were small, try checking out a local nanobrewery. They’re not as easy to find, but they’re becoming more and more popular in this world of high rents and astronomical overhead.
