Now that I’ve eaten my way through somebody else’s list (Time Out New York), I’m ready to compile my own 100 spectacular things I’ve tasted in 2012. Look for another five dishes every few days.

NUMBER 40: GNOCCHI at I TRE MERLI

Years ago, I used to avoid going out and spending money on Italian food since I thought I could easily cook pasta at home. If you could taste the limp soggy spaghetti I used to make, you’d understand just how wrong I was. I thought the term al dente related to a dentist’s office.

The potato pasta known as gnocchi are some of the hardest to get right. I’ve tasted enlightening versions at places like Union Square Café, but the modest and rustic fare at I Tre Merli truly surprised me. These had a tender bite which gave way to a soft, plump interior. They soaked up a nice pesto sauce and made a surprising first course at this Italian restaurant. Sadly, the location I tasted them at in the West Village has now closed (and reopened as Chez Sardine), but they are still on the menu at the Soho location. And still so much better than anything I could do at home. Price: $16

NUMBER 50: STEAK TARTARE at POST OFFICE

Sure, I’m a carnivore, but I don’t go bonkers over meat like many food bloggers. Strangely enough steak houses are probably my least favorite kind of restaurant. That being said, when a modest cut of meat is prepared exquisitely with the right seasonings and sauce, I could easily forget vegetables ever existed.

And while Post Office’s steak tartare is not cooked, it is certainly exquisitely prepared. This whiskey lounge serves some of the best bar food in Brooklyn, including their zippy version of raw chopped steak. Fresh filet mignon is tossed with the most perfect ingredients to provide a wonderful balance of flavors and textures. Bright, spicy, and rich, this version (with a side of seasoned and buttered toast points) has the potential to convert even the staunchest of vegetarians. Price: $14

NUMBER 60: PORK ARISTA SANDWICH at EATALY

Pork has never gone out of style – except maybe with the Jews and Muslims (for them, it was never in style). But those of us willing to eat in sin know the decadent delight in the flavor of fatty, salty pig. It’s pretty irresistible, which might be why so many religions find it reprehensible.

The Italians have certainly embraced the swine and nowhere is that more evident than at Eataly’s rotisserie, where the roasted meat sandwiches change daily. Every Monday they offer the Pork Arista (which was also named one of Village Voice’s top dishes this year). The soft and peppery roasted pork needs no mustard or vegetables – just a buttery baguette to sop up all the flavor. This is only available for lunch, so pass the crowds and follow your nose (not your religion). Price: $11.80/$13.80
