My search for the best beer in New York continues….
It’s so cool is how tight-knit the local craft beer world is in New York. Most times when I see a unique can being sold, it’s actually a collaboration between breweries. Oftentimes it’s a brewery in Queens and the Bronx coming together, but for Taco Wednesday the breweries are practically neighbors. (more…)

My search for the best beer in New York continues….
As much as I complain about the price, the cleanliness, the service, and the corporateness of Whole Foods (which might now be getting more corporate with the recent announcement that they have ben purchased by Amazon), I find myself there way too often. One good thing I will say about Whole Foods is they have a pretty good beer selection with a growing local focus.

For instance, a number of local breweries have done special exclusive beers just for the grocery store, Three Brewing in Gowanus is one such brewery and it was on the shelf at the Tribeca location where I picked up a solo can of the Categorical Error.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

Things have slowed down recently on this blog. I’ve been pretty consistent with my Dish of the Week every Thursday, but have not managed to write many other reviews. A few reasons for that:

I’ve been immersed in some other projects (including a video series that will be debuting soon) and I had a baby so my life has changed dramatically. It’s amazing how much more difficult it is to get things done like writing blog posts.

But through all of that, one thing has been easy. I’ve been able to drink more beer (is that the reason for this potbelly or is it the fatherhood thing?) So really, no good excuse for not posting more beer reviews.

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

First they did it with sodas, like Root Beer and Cream Soda. Now Coney Island Brewing Company has turned to famous cocktails to inspire their beers. The Hot Toddy is an unlikely beer style, but it works wonders. The strong ale (12.5% ABV) is fermented with honey, cinnamon, and lemons. It is then aged on whiskey barrel staves before being served hot or cold. Yes, it’s beer, but you’d be forgiven if you thought you were actually drinking a cocktail. .Price Varies.

Bronx Brewery is doing so many great things and have now been more ubiquitous around town. Their take on a double IPA is no joke – hitting on all cylinders with a number of different hop varietals playing together for different levels of hoppiness – grassy, fruity, piney, citrusy. It’s a well-rounded and uttely drinkable play on a new American style.

For Thanksgiving dessert, I popped open a bottle of Big Alice’s ambitious beer that is aged in used gin barrels. Granted this was a lot drier and more savory than I imagined with layers of sweetness and bold balanced acidity. Probably not the best beer to pair with dessert but when the beer is this good, I almost decided to forgo dessert and just drink this.
