My search for the best beer in New York continues….

Things have slowed down recently on this blog. I’ve been pretty consistent with my Dish of the Week every Thursday, but have not managed to write many other reviews. A few reasons for that:

I’ve been immersed in some other projects (including a video series that will be debuting soon) and I had a baby so my life has changed dramatically. It’s amazing how much more difficult it is to get things done like writing blog posts.

But through all of that, one thing has been easy. I’ve been able to drink more beer (is that the reason for this potbelly or is it the fatherhood thing?) So really, no good excuse for not posting more beer reviews.

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

First they did it with sodas, like Root Beer and Cream Soda. Now Coney Island Brewing Company has turned to famous cocktails to inspire their beers. The Hot Toddy is an unlikely beer style, but it works wonders. The strong ale (12.5% ABV) is fermented with honey, cinnamon, and lemons. It is then aged on whiskey barrel staves before being served hot or cold. Yes, it’s beer, but you’d be forgiven if you thought you were actually drinking a cocktail.¬†.Price Varies.

Bronx Brewery is doing so many great things and have now been more ubiquitous around town. Their take on a double IPA is no joke – hitting on all cylinders with a number of different hop varietals playing together for different levels of hoppiness – grassy, fruity, piney, citrusy. It’s a well-rounded and uttely drinkable play on a new American style.

For Thanksgiving dessert, I popped open a bottle of Big Alice’s ambitious beer that is aged in used gin barrels. Granted this was a lot drier and more savory than I imagined with layers of sweetness and bold balanced acidity.¬†Probably not the best beer to pair with dessert but when the beer is this good, I almost decided to forgo dessert and just drink this.

The brewery side of Dirck the Norseman has been consistently putting out bizzare creations that challenge the concept of beer. My favorite this year was this wonderfully roasty and super tart wheat beer that surprises with rich, woody coffee notes and a balancing lemon acidity. Price: $7

THE OWL FARM, 297 9th Street (between 4th and 5th Avenue), Park Slope, BrooklynWow, I have not put in a beer review in a long time. And that’s crazy because craft beer is more uniquitous to New York than ever before. There are now 27 breweries across all five boroughs and that number literally changes every week.
One of the newest to open has been making quite a splash at craft beer bars across Brooklyn. It’s called Interboro Spirits and Ales and they are not only making craft beer in their Bushwick facility, but will also be distilling whiskeys as well.
