I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2015…

Chicken Schwarma Sandwich at KARAM

I really only came out to Karam because I heard the falafel was pretty good. But I should have read the signs and immediately ordered their chicken schwarma sandwich because that’s the thing that makes this Bay Ridge joint a true destination. Succulent pieces of shaved chicken are stuffed into a pita along with pickles, lettuce, and a game-changing lemon-garlic sauce known as toum. Price: $7

My search for the best cheesecake in New York continues….

JEAN DANET PASTRY, 7526 5th Avenue (at 76th Street), Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

Bay Ridge must be the bakery district. In a matter of a few blocks in this diverse Brooklyn neighborhood, you have a Greek pastry shop, a French one, an iconic Scandinavian one, and one hailing from the Middle East. That’s a lot of eclectic and delicious treats in a small radius.

My search for the best pizza in New York continues….

PIZZA WAGON, 8610 5th Avenue (between 86th and 87th Street), Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

While I was standing at a counter at Pizza Wagon, I looked around me at the diverse group of people in the place and realized the magic of pizza. It brings people together from all walks of life. There were high school kids, construction workers, elderly couples, and young families all enjoying the wonder of a good slice. No troubles here. Just good old fashioned New York pizza.

All of Bay Ridge Comes Here

I also wondered if most of the people in the crowded seating area lived in the Bay Ridge area because I was actually a visitor. Not sure how many of those this place gets. I had come to this residential neighborhood in Brooklyn (which I really love every time I visit) to find a great slice of cheesecake. I also ended up with a great slice of pizza.

My search for the best falafel in New York continues….

KARAM RESTAURANT, 8519 4th Avenue (between 85th and 86th Street), Bay Ridge, BrooklynI was recently in the far south neighborhood of Bay Ridge. One of the things I love about this neighborhood is that its generally not a destination neighborhood. Most people in New York have heard of it, but unless you live there, odds are you are not taking trips to explore it.

I’m not like everybody else. And I think a friend of mine was a little surprised to see me here when I ran into him on 86th Street. When I told him I was visiting to try some falafel and cheesecake, he was pretty impressed and perhaps slightly confused.

SADLY, MONACO’S BAKERY & CAFÉ IS NOW CLOSED.

MONACO'S BAKERY & CAFÉ, 8511 3rd Avenue (between 85th and 86th Street), Bay Ridge, BrooklynMonaco’s might look like it’s been on Third Avenue in Bay Ridge for decades. But no where do you see a sign that says “Since…” or “Established in…”. And that’s because this business has only been here since 2011. Not long enough to warrant an impressive sign.

That doesn’t mean the owner and baker, Joe Monaco, has not been baking Italian pastries for over 40 years. He has. And 2011 is the year that he finally opened his own place after decades of baking at the legendary East Village shop Veniero’s and for some of the most notable celebrities of yesterday, like Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra.

All Hail, Falafel!

I underestimated the modest little falafel. I was expecting some great things, sure, but I was also anticipating lots of dry and dense chickpea balls. Greasy, soggy, and mealy were words I used very rarely in my falafel reviews. Of course, I stuck with the most renowned and popular falafel spots in the city. I’m sure terrible falafel is out there somewhere, but we’re also blessed to be rolling in the good stuff.
