I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

We certainly eat with our eyes before anything else. And the presentation of the ham salad at Amada is proof of that. Even before I tasted the high-quality serrano ham wrapped around the bright salad of arugula, figs, spice almonds, and cabrales cheese, I knew this was going to be a dish worth remembering. And it does taste as good as it looks. Price: $15

There is one dish on the menu at the brand-spanking new Amada that is super super exciting. In fairness, many of the dishes are super exciting. There is an arugula salad wrapped in serrano ham, a gourmet artichoke empanada, and all sorts of grilled chorizo and sausages. But we have those dishes in one form or another at other Spanish tapas bars around the city. I’ve yet to encounter anything quite like the Ibérico Presa. (more…)

Roasted Chicken 'Chimi' Salad at NUM PANG

Num Pang is known for their meat-heavy Cambodian-style sandwiches. And they’re great with cilantro and pickled vegetables on a buttery baguette, but I discovered that the flavors are just as bold and unique in salad form. I’ve been addicted to their chimchurri-glazed chicken salad this entire year. On top of bean sprouts, peppers, peanuts, and cabbage, the moist thigh meat is hearty and delicious and only enhanced by the sweet tangy dressing. Price: $10.95

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Danny Meyer is the king of the New York food scene, isn’t he? No matter what any other cynical restaurant worker might tell you, he knows how to make diners feel comfortable. I worked for the man for 2 years and fully respect his point of view. When I dine at one of his restaurants, I usually leave with a smile on my face.

Case in point: We showed up for a late brunch at North End Grill and when the pastry we ordered was no longer available, they sent us an extra pan du chocolat on the house. That’s the Danny Meyer way! Except this time it backfired because I really only wanted to eat one pastry to prevent myself from feeling too full when the meal came. Oh, the problems!!

My search for the best hot dogs in New York continues….

Everybody goes to Shake Shack and orders the burger or a shake. I like being a little different. And so I got a thrill out of getting to the front of the line and not even considering their beef patties.
