I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2015…

Quiche at MAMAN

Last year, I couldn’t get enough of Maman’s game-changing chocolate chip cookie. This year, I found myself at the trendy French café a bit earlier in the day. So instead of indulging on a cookie at 10am, I became slightly addicted to their housemade quiche. They offer quite a variety of fillings, but I always enjoyed the fresh mozzarella and prosciutto or the roasted leeks and Dijon mustard. The tops are always nicely caramelized and the pastry shell is absolute perfection. Price: $6

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2015…

Spanakopita at PI BAKERIE

I was immediately transported back to Greece when I walked into the quaint little hidden bakery Pi in Soho. This was opened by a chef from Astoria, which is almost the equivalent of saying people got off the boat from Greece to bake these pastries. Their spanakopita (spinach pie) is exactly as I remember them from when I was in Greece – a buttery and flaky crust held together an eggy, herbal, cheesy spinach filling. Price: $8.50

My search for the best cheesecake in New York continues….

LADY M CAKE BOUTIQUE, 36 West 40th Street (between Fifth and Sixth Avenue), Midtown WestThe cakes at Lady M are impeccable. They’re beautifully designed and have an irresistible light, heavenly quality. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of their Mille Crêpes and would rate it as one of the best desserts in the city.

No Cheesecake in Sight

I had heard some buzz about their cheesecake which isn’t as visible as their other options. In fact, it’s rarely out on display and you have to ask if it’s available that day. As I asked for it, it felt like it would be one of those secret, off-menu specials that outshone all the other cakes. Sort of like knowing at Magnolia Bakery you should skip the cupcakes and order the banana pudding.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

LADY M CAKE BOUTIQUE, 36 West 40th Street (between Fifth and Sixth Avenue), Midtown WestUp until now, if I heard the name Lady M, I’d think of a Shakespearean villainess trying to wash the blood off her hands. Now I also think about a sleek cake shop and their iconic delicacies.

We visited the new Lady M in Midtown right across from Bryant Park, although an Upper East Side location has existed since 2004. I’m sort of amazed I had never encountered these cakes before. There seems to be a cult following and many claim it to be the best cakes in the city. I might just have to agree.

BIEN CUIT, 120 Smith Street (between Dean and Pacific Street), Cobble Hill, BrooklynI always wished there were more than 8 nights to Hanukkah. By the eighth crazy night of receiving presents, displaying plastic menorahs in the window, and feasting on latkes, you’ve gotten into a routine. You’ve grown accustomed to this celebratory Jewish festival. And then it all ends and you’re back where you started. With a few more pairs of socks.

And while last night might have been the official finale of Jewish gift giving, at least potato latkes never fully go out of season. I tasted an extraordinary version of this Hanukkah speciality at Bien Cuit over the weekend and am exicted to hear they will be offering it at least for another few days.

Zucker Bakery, 433 East 9th Street (between First Avenue and Avenue A), East VillageI don’t normally post an entry on a major holiday like Thanksgiving – especially the one year it happens to fall on the exact same day as the first day of another major holiday (Hanukkah) resulting in a once-in-a-lifetime mega holiday. Of course, everybody has heard about Thanksgivukkah by now. Heck, I even made a video about it.

And while I’m slaving away over a hot stove trying my hand at wacky hybrid combinations like pecan pie rugelach and brussels sprout latkes, Zucker Bakery in the East Village has already made the most perfect Thanksgivukkah dish.
