Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

In New York, we have artsy and diverse neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Astoria, and the Lower East Side. They are incredible places. But I wish we had the colorful and food-centric enclave called Kensington Market. That one is in Toronto.

Since it’s adjacent to the city’s Chinatown, it makes sense that Toronto Urban Adventures hosts a tour of the two neighborhoods together – Kensington Market & Chinatown. It’s a great way to explore the awesome street art hidden down secret alleys, meet some of the locals who populate the bohemian area, and get a sense of which restaurants and food shops are the ones to visit.

Watch the newest episode of Locals Know to see what the tour is all about and then get more info about it by clicking here. Toronto is a very quick plane ride away and if you’ve never been or it’s been a while, you owe yourself at least a weekend away. It’s a really cool town!

My search for the best bagels in New York continues….

BLACK SEED BAGELS, 170 Elizabeth Street (between Spring and Kenmare Street), NolitaThere’s not usually much hoopla surrounding the opening of a new bagel shop. If I discover a new one, it’s usually by walking by or a friend tells me about a new shop in their neighborhood. It’s a bit different for pizza and ice cream shops – they’re always over-publicized and hyped to the point of excess.

Black Seed is a brand new bagel shop that not only opened to much fanfare and publicity, but also got more attention from the long line of food-obsessives who waited hours for a taste of these new bagels.

The Spreads

Part of the hype is due to the fact that this new shop in Nolita is a collboration between the owners of Mile End, a Montreal-style deli that has been blessed with lots of attention and praise (including on this blog) and The Smile, a popular brunch spot in the area. Black Seed is also distinct because the bagels made on-premises are much closer to the more compact honey-laced Montreal bagels than their doughy NYC brethren.

I’ve tried Montreal bagels once before at Mile End and really enjoyed them with some smoked salmon. But those were flown in from Canada. These are made right here in lower Manhattan. And so the crowds descened to get a taste of something new.

My search for the best bagels in New York continues….

SIMIT + SMITH, 100 William Street (between John and Platt Street), Financial District“It’s not a bagel!!” That’s what most of NY’s bagel connosieurs cried when Simit + Smith opened up in town. The new company has introduced the city to a round bready breakfast food with a hole in the middle. It sorta looks like a bagel, it comes topped with sesame seeds, and you can spread creamy cheese on top. But it’s not a bagel.

My search for the best bagels in New York continues….

LONG ISLAND BAGEL CAFE, 125 Fulton Street (between Nassau and Warren Street), Financial District

If a bagel shop opened in this city calling itself “California Bagels” or “Philadelphia Bagels,” they couldn’t sensibly expect to stay in business for very long. New York City is the leading American city for bagels so it’s silly to try to hawk lesser bagels here. Nobody would go for it.

But Long Island Bagel Cafe is a bit of a different story. Long Island is truly an extension of the city and this particular company has been hand-rolling them out on Nassau and Suffolk counties since 1986. A few months ago they brought their first NYC location to the Financial District to show us how they do it out on the Island.

A once in a lifetime occurence happens this year as Thanksgiving and Chanukkah fall on the same day. To celebrate both holidays at the exact same moment, I bring my friend Jonathan to explore the culinary holiday possibilities at Ess-a-Bagel.

My search for the best bagels in New York continues….

The newest tour I’ve been giving is the Neighborhood Eats Tour of the Carroll Gardens area of Brooklyn. I say “area” since we technically hit three different neighborhoods (Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and Brooklyn Heights) and they’re all very similar in architecture, culture, and diversity of food options. Since I don’t live in any of those neighborhoods (I don’t even live in Brooklyn), I make it a point to eat at a different restaurant before or after each of my tours on Saturdays.
