Welcome to a new segment on this blog. On Mondays get ready for a quick list of the best restaurants, dishes, or food trends in a certain category. There are so many great things to eat and drink in the city and think of this as your resource to find the absolute best.

If you look around the city this week, it seems that every bar wants to be German. Blue and white flags are everywhere, waitresses wear traditional garb are outside taking a smoke break, and the faint sound of an oompah band can be heard on just about any street.

It’s Oktoberfest! Perfect time to celebrate and soak up German culture. But make sure you find your way to an authentic German bar or restaurant and not get stuck at an Irish bar in disguise. Here are the seven best German bars in NYC (in no particular order): (more…)

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

KAFANA, 116 Avenue C (between East 7th and East 8th Street), East Village

This summer I spent a few weeks travelling around Eastern Europe and I learned that the king of food in most countries is beer and sausage. Here in New York, I’ve only experienced a bit of the true Eastern European food at places in Astoria many years ago.  It’s a cuisine that is prevalent here, but it’s just a little more difficult to find.

And while Kafana is right in the heart of Alphabet City, few people know it outside of Serbians and Bosnians looking for a taste of home. For everyone else, it’s a hidden gem worth uncovering. (more…)

My search for the best ice cream in New York continues ….

MIKEY LIKES IT, 199 Avenue A (between East 12th and East 13th Street), East Village

I feel pretty bad about this review. I don’t loke criticizing small businesses that are doing their best to invest in and embrace the community.

I like Mikey Likes It. The owner was on premises and thanked me for my support. I also like the concept – the ice cream and flavors are influenced by both Southern comfort food and pop culture. There is a flavor named Foxy Brown and another composed of Pecan Pie ice cream and praline pecans. The only thing I don’t like about the place is the ice cream. (more…)

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

Last year, I helped design a tour for Urban Adventures that has been a huge success (if I do say so myself). It involves cocktails, so how could it be bad?

I lead the tour pretty regularly but we have about three other guides that also do a great job with it. So on the latest episode of Locals Know, I experience the New York Craft Cocktail tour from a brand new perspective thanks to Josh. Watch the video below to get a sense of the tour and watch us discover hidden bars, new speakeasies, and drink a whole lots of well-crafted cocktails.
