Come back on Wednesdays for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

Somewhere back in my lineage, some of my ancestors came to New York from Hungary. Unfortunately, their stories and where they came from in the country has been lost to time. But when I visited Budapest last summer, I certainly felt a strong connection to the energy and the history of the city. I can’t imagine it had anything to do with all that goulash and strudel.

Food obviously plays a big role in the Bites & Sights Food tour that is featured on the newest episode of Locals Know. For this episode, Livia from Budapest Urban Adventures is my guide who helps me navigate both the Hungarian language and its wide reaching cuisine. We wind our way from the historic Central Market to a Communist-themed bar into the old Jewish quarter and to a traditional Hungarian strudel house. Of course, stopping to sightsee and eat along the way.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

Along the Danube River sits a great capital with stunning architecture and hidden surprises. I’m not talking about Vienna or Budapest. Everybody knows about those cities. Bratislava is a somewhat undiscovered gem that has all these things and more. And because it is much smaller than the others, it feels much more manageable and quaint.

But like most cities, the tourists gather in the main part of town. I got to see so much more of Bratislava than most visitors ever do because I met up with Lukas from Urban Adventures who let me in on the Local Secrets of Bratislava. We visited a modern brewery run by punk rockers, had a picnic with incredible sites, and took a trolley to a beautiful neighborhood that I never would have discovered if it wasn’t for my local guide.

You’ll be hearing a lot more about Bucharest soon, trust me. The tourism industry in the capital of Romania is growing and before you know it, you will understand why it is often called “Paris of the East.” Its stunning architecture is a cornicopia of different styles and eras. Its food is satisfying and rich. And there is plenty of romantic plazas and gardens to rival the City of Love.

On the Urban AdventuresBohemian Bucharest tour, I got to really get a local sense of this ever-growing and vibrant city. We rode on the tram past some fascinating Communist buildings, visited abandoned mansions that are now young, hip bars, and explored a local market where we were the only ones who didn’t speak Romanian.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. In Locals Know, I explore a new city through the tours of Urban Adventures.

After the beautiful island of Mallorca, I continued to stick by the water and explored the canals of Venice. If you’ve ever been to Venice, you know it is an absolutely breathtaking city but it’s also full of tourists. The streets and canals are lined with visitors and it seems like there are no locals in site. Do people actually live in Venice?

Sure enough they do and the way to get the real culture of the city is to go through the back alleys and hang out in bacari – traditional bars that serve small bites with wine. Those small bites are called cicchetti. And the Cicchetti & Wine tour with Urban Adventures is one of the best things you could do in Venice. You do get to explore the canals a bit (riding a traditional traghetto), learn about the traditions in Venice, and sample food and wine from five local bars.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I’ve been to Lisbon three times now. Really not sure how that happened. A few years ago, Portugal wasn’t even on my radar as a destination. Now it’s the place I’ve visited the most in Europe.

And I love it – it’s a beautiful city, with heartfelt people, and an amazing undiscovered culinary culture. Each time I visit, I drink lots of Vinho Verde, eat a ton of incredible seafood (I’ve visited the legendary Ramiro all three times), and consumed my weight in pastries. One thing I’ve never been able to do (but always wanted to) was explore the African and Indian cuisines available in Portugal.

Mozambique, Goa, and Angola are all former colonies of Portugal, so due to many immigrants in Lisbon, the food is pretty authentic (at least that’s what they tell me). All three of these cuisines are rather underepresented in New York so since I was here, I wanted to explore it.

img_0681 I’m doing something I’ve never done before on this blog. And that’s because I just came back from an adventure that was unlike anything I’ve ever done before in my life. For six weeks of the summer, I was travelling around Europe meeting wonderful locals and eating amazing food. And I got paid for it!!

The real reason I was there was to make videos on some Urban Adventure tours. Stay tuned for 14 new episodes of Locals Know. But until then, to whet your appetite (and for me to re-live my incredible dream-come-true journey), I’ve decided to document the food I ate in each city.

So instead of picking just one dish of the week this week, I’m going to pick 14 – one for each city I visited.
