My search for the best hot dog in New York continues….

SHADY DAWG, Locations VaryHot dogs are intrinsically linked to the New York street food scene. The classic New York food cart is indeed one that sells “dirty water dogs.” But more immediately, both have undergone gourmet transformations that have forced the prices of both to rise.

Neither street food nor hot dogs should be luxury items, but I guess the food world disagrees. Food trucks are now charging upwards of $15 for a single item and hot dogs cost as much as $16. Some food vendors are even going so far as to charge $30 for a single hot dog!

D'ANGELO'S ITALIAN SAUSAGE, Rego Park, Queens

Every year my buddy Jeff Orlick co-organizes an exciting neighborhood event in Jackson Heights, Queens. It’s called Viva la Comida and Jeff brings in some of the best, most eclectic street food from the borough.

VIVA LA COMIDA, vivalacomida.com

I always expect to see some Indian, Asian, and South American food represented. But I always forget about the European food trucks. And I really shouldn’t.

This year, alongside Mystikk Masala and The Arepa Lady, was a classic old-school Italian sausage truck that parks on Woodhaven Avenue, far from the route of most Manhattan-based food obsessives.

ROSAMUNDE SAUSAGE GRILL, 285 Bedford Avenue (between South 1st Street and Grand Street), Williamsburg, Brooklyn

I almost turned around once I stepped into the very hipster-centric Rosamunde Sausage Grill in Williamsburg, the center of hipster-centricity. Among the long list of sausages at this Brooklyn location of a popular West Coast transplant were gourmet-sounding concoctions like chicken habañero and duck with figs, but no “hot dog”. I was looking for something plain and simple. Something to measure against all the other frankfurters in this city.

Where's My Dog?

The bartender pointed me toward the knockwurst. Of course! But is the German all-beef seasoned wiener the same thing as a hot dog? Sure, the Germans introduced the wursts to this city and no doubt they evolved (or devolved) into the dirty water dogs we have today. But are all hot dogs considered a knockwurst?

BROOKLYN PIGGIES, Pier 17, South Street Seaport

When I was little and dragged to some event where I had to wear a suit and tie, I found salvation in the passed appetizers. And my  favorite of all those were the pigs in a blanket. It was amazing that the hot dog could be improved upon, but here was perfection on a cocktail napkin. How could it get better than mini weenies wrapped in puff pastry? This is especially true when you’re 12.

Funny enough, nowadays at a party of this sort, I hang out by the deviled eggs and chicken satays and pass over the overly processed and usually dry pigs in a blanket. But it’s a real nostalgic treat when I pop one of those piggies and it’s even better when they’re actually good.

Hot Dog Recap

It was no surprise that my hot dog search was littered with double entendres and childish snickers. And this post will be more of the same. Try to control yourself, if you can.

SADLY, LOS PERROS LOCOS IS NOW CLOSED.

LOS PERROS LOCOS, 201 Allen Street (at Houston Street), Lower East Side

When I lived in Astoria, I discovered the joy of South American hot dogs. I didn’t even realize there was such a thing. But just like every region of the US has their version of hot dogs with specific toppings (check out this amazing guide), so do many of the countries of our neighboring continent to the South.

In Astoria, I was blessed with living close to the San Antonio Bakery #2 which specializes in Chilean pastries and the infamous completo – a hot dog topped with guacamole, tomatoes, onions, and a drizzle of mayonnaise. I do miss it terribly and have not had a proper South American hot dog since leaving the borough of Queens.
