Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

If you read this blog, it’s no secret that I absolutely love The Vendy Awards. It’s a full day of eating such amazing diverse food on an island minutes away from Manhattan. But it’s also a celebration of the community and hard work of the vendors on the streets of New York. I’ve been attending this annual event for the last seven years and I guess it’s at that point when they ask you to host the entire thing.

I’m well-connected to the Street Vendor Project through my work with Turnstile Tours. We give food cart tours to educate the public on the hardships of street vending and we donate time and money to the advocacy work of SVP.

When they couldn’t get a celebrity emcee this year, they turned to the biggest star of all: me!

So it was pretty cool. I got to be on the mic, talk way too much, and announce the winners. I felt like Billy Crystal without the millions of people watching or the fat paycheck.

This Friday, one of the biggest and most diverse food events is happening in Manhattan once again! Village Voice hosts the ninth annual Choice Eats and tickets are still on sale here. This event has always been a great and fun way to taste food from many new and classic restaurants in one place. More than 50 restaurants will participate, including Rosemary’s, Untamed Sandwiches,¬†Bara, and many more. Instead of spending Friday night restaurant hopping, you may as well check out this event since you’ll also get drinks, live music, and the chance to win prizes.

VILLAGE VOICE'S HOLIDAY SPIRITS

It hasn’t happened yet, but it will get cold in this city (unless global warming has changed all that already). And the best way to warm up during the cold season is, not with a coat, but with locally made spirits and cocktails.

Village Voice will be showcasing the exciting local distilling scene once again with Holiday Spirits on Thursday, November 19 beginning at 6pm. The event takes place aboard a Hornblower Cruise ship and will feature cocktails and tastings from over 25 drink makers, including Kings County Distillery, Van Brunt Stillhouse, and Jack from Brooklyn. Not to mention dinner, live music, and an actual cruise. The boat departs at just after 7:30 and sails around Lower Manhattan.

Tickets start at a very reasonable $55, which includes all drinks, food, and entertainment. Click here for more info and to purchase tickets.

Village Voice's CHOICE EATS 2015

Walking around the food tables at Village Voice’s Choice Eats, I begin to wonder how the represented restaurants and food businesses decided on the dishes they brought to the table. Is it their most popular dish? Or the easiest to prepare? Or the cheapest? Some places even offer up multiple dishes and a drink. It’s a chance for them to introduce themselves to an audience that might not walk into their restaurant on their own. So they should choose wisely.

Choice Eats 2015Every March, Village Voice presents a huge food event called Choice Eats. It’s definitely one of my favorite evenings of eating each year, as restaurants from all over the city congregate under one roof.

This year, the feasting will occur on Friday, March 13 at Metropolitan Plaza. The line-up has not been fully announced yet, but we do know there will be some exciting hot new restaurants right alongside some old-time favorites. I’m specifically looking forward to trying 2 Duck Goose, a new Cantonese spot in Gowanus; the Cadanian-Cajun cuisine from King Bee; and the most popular Thai restaurant in the Rockaways (an area I don’t get to very often) called Thai Rock.

Tickets are now on sale (you can purchase them here) and they usually sell out, which is why I’m telling everybody about this now. I do recommend splurging on the $85 tickets for early entry, which ensures you get samples an hour before the crowd arrives. But for $65, you still get general admission and access to all the food samples.

QUEEN OF THE NIGHT, Diamond Horseshoe at Paramount Hotel, 235 West 46th Street (between Broadway and Eighth Avenue), Midtown WestI started this website really to combine my two passions: food and performance. And I continue to have success (and lots of fun) doing that with my comedic food videos. But I recently went to a dinner that fully combined those ideas into one unique, exhilirating night.

It’s called Queen of the Night and comes from some exciting theatrical producers who also had a hand in the immersive shows Sleep No More and The Donkey Show (two of my favorite experiences). What’s even more exciting with this show is that it includes dinner.
