21 SHANGHAI HOUSE, 21 Division Street (between Catherine and Market Street), Chinatown

The new restaurants that open in the heart of Chinatown never get the same amountĀ of press and fanfare as the hot restaurants that open in Brooklyn or Chelsea. So they often slip under-the-radar. (more…)

KUNG FU LITTLE STEAMED BUNS RAMEN, 811 Eighth Avenue (between 48th and 49th Street), Hell's Kitchen

For my dumpling reviews, it’s been a while since I’ve ventured much further outside one of this city’s Chinatowns. I especially did not expect to find myself in the Theater District for legitimate dumplings.

But that’s exactly where Kung Fu Ramen sits – on Eighth Avenue just a few blocks away from most of the big hotels and splashy Broadway theaters. (more…)

THE BAO, 13 St. Marks Place (between Third and Second Avenue), East Village

I recently read a blog post where the writer said they visited a mediocre dumpling spot on St. Marks. It turns out they were talking about The Bao, which opened late last year and specializes in xiao long bao (or soup dumplings).

Now I might have been inclinced to call this a mediocre dumpling spot myself if I hadn’t done the research about the business and sat down for a meal. Most of the food options along St. Marks tend to cater to a certain clientele that celebrate cheap fast food more than a quality meal. It’d be shocking to find some of the best dumplings in the city on this mediocre food street.

SHU JIAO FU ZHOU, 118 Eldridge Street (at Broome Street), Chinatown

As I was leaving Shu Jiao Fu Zhou, someone spied me taking photos and politely told me how great the place was and that he comes there every day. Not sure if that was a plea for me to give it attention or a warning to not make his tiny Chinese spot over-run with foodies. I wish I had that much power.

Either way, I’m glad I discovered it and I agree with that guy. The place is great.

DUMPLING GALAXY, 42-35 Main Street (between Maple Avenue and Franklin Avenue), Inside Arcadia Mall, Flushing, Queens

For me, too many options are both a blessing and a curse. I am terrible at making decisions mostly because I want a little bit of everything. So you can imagine how overwhelming Dumpling Galaxy was for me.

Pages and Pages of Dumplings

The new Flushing restaurant has a menu of 100 different dumpling fillings. And frustratingly, they don’t offer a combo plate. So I had to choose between things like dried octopus and chives, curry beef, and egg with dill. Where to begin??

MIMI CHENG'S DUMPLINGS, 179 Second Avenue (between East 11th and East 12th Street), East Village

Certain foods just work better when they’re dirty and cheap. I know that sounds wrong, but after trying the “cleaned-up” dumplings at Mimi Cheng’s, I realize this is so true.
