BEST NYC DISH OF THE WEEK: Cream Puffs at BARACHOU

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Coming off of Thanksgiving and heading into the gluttonous holidays is probably not the best time to recommend a decadent dessert. Or maybe it’s the perfect time. You’ll win Christmas if you skip the milk and cookies for a box of these irresistible cream puffs.

Barachou is an adorable little French pastry shop on the Upper West with a focus on cream puffs. More recently a second location opened much further downtown in the West Village.

Cream puffs are a weakness of mine, but the minute I walked into the original location and smelled the sugar in the air and eyed the array of semi-mini puffs, I knew I would fall pretty deep.

My plan for one cream puff turned into a box of three consisting of three flavors that I knew had to be good: chocolate hazelnut, tiramisu, and passionfruit.

The buttery tender choux pastry was light and decadent forcing my eyes to roll back into my head. And then that sweet pastry gave way to even more sweet perfectly flavored cream.

In the case of the tiramisu, hints of coffee and cream; the chocolate covered hazelnut was spiked with crunchy nuts and loaded with chocolate notes; and the passionfruit was tropical, sweet, and our favorite (yes, I shared them)!

You have the whole month of January to worry about calories. We’re still in celebration mode and there’s no better time to indulge in the pleasures of these heavenly cream puffs. Price: $3.30 or $9/$17/$33 (box of 3/6/12)
