DISH OF THE WEEK: Tanta Robba at VIA DELLA SCROFA

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

There was a time not that long ago that one of the best spots in the East Village was Sara Jenkins’ Porchetta. They sold just that: meaty roast pork sandwiches with layers of delicious fat and a crispy skinned exterior.

It was a true revelation, especially for someone like me, who had yet to discover the wonders of porchetta.

Sadly that iconic spot closed in 2016 and the East Village mourned.

Well, there is a new Italian market and sandwich shop that recently opened that brings back the smells, tastes, and vibe of Porchetta.

This one is a bit more fresh-off-the-boat Italian with lots of ingredients around the shop for sale. They also do not roast their own porchetta, but rather use Cioli packaged porchetta to create a few delicious sandwich creations.

If you think this is anything like Boar’s Head, you’d be sorely mistaken.

I chose the Tanta Robba, which features the warm porchetta with all its fatty pork notes along with flecks of aromatic herbs. It’s layered on an excellent Italian roll with incredible smoked mozzarella, and grilled meaty artichokes. Pushed and warmed slightly as a panini, this is far superior to your typical bodega sandwich.

It’s a different, but no less exciting experience then the old much-missed Porchetta. And hopefully Via Della Scrofa will be in the neighborhood for a long time to come. Price: $9.99
