DISH OF THE WEEK: Curry Ramen at MENKOI SATO

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

People would often ask me how I knew about all these restaurants, bars, and cafés. Some, of course, I learned about through social media and other food blogs, but many I literally discovered as I was walking down the street and came across a place I never noticed before. And those were the best discoveries.

Menkoi Sato was one of those spots.

It’s evidently been open for a few years but somehow I only noticed it a few months back. I took note of it and finally found my way back before a nearby meeting.

As I mentioned last week, soup is not something I write about often this time of year. But the reason for two hot soup dishes in a row is of course because I enjoyed both of these back in February before lockdown forced me to make all my own food.

We are now in July (although in some ways it still feels like April) and this hot soup does not appear on Menkoi Sato’s current menu. I would love to try some of their cold ramens but alas I am nowhere near their storefront for take-out so I’ll stick to my memory of when a hot spicy soup was weather appropriate.

The Curry Ramen was top of their special menu and it was the most interesting sounding to me.

The broth was brown and rich made from a miso and chicken broth base but seasoned with 17 curry spices. I couldn’t begin to guess their secret combination but it made for an earthy, nutty, and quite spicy bowl. Both ground pork and loin soaked up that strong curry flavoring and the springy noodles acted as somewhat of a foil.

It was a perfect warming dish for winter or fall or spring or when stuck inside an air conditioned apartment in quarantine.

And I really hope I can get out there again soon to discover place Menkoi Sato. Price$18
