DISH OF THE WEEK: Chicharrón con Camote at BROADWAY BAKERY

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

BROADWAY BAKERY, 89-52 Elmhurst Avenue (at Case Street), Jackson Heights, Queens

You’d walk by Broadway Bakery without giving it a second glance. Maybe you’d run in for coffee or a slice of pizza, but you certainly wouldn’t think it was a place full of culinary delights. It doesn’t even have a single review on Yelp. Imagine that!

Thanks to my friend Jeff Orlick, I filmed a new video (which will be released in the coming months) at Broadway Bakery. And I got to sample some of their Peruvian specialities, like empanadas and pionono (a rolled cake with dulce de leche).

But the dish that really made me want to tell the world about this place was their chicharrón con camote sandwich. I learned this is a typical Peruvian breakfast dish.

The sandwich was made up of cubes of fried pork, pickled red onions, and fried sweet potatoes. It was just incredible with a hint of sweetness and a salty meaty crunch. In New York, we’re stuck with egg and cheese sandwiches and the Peruvians get this delicious gutbomb.

There are about five Broadway Bakery locations around Queens, all owned by the same family. I urge you to find one, go inside, and ask for the Peruvian specialities. You’ll never look at a corner bakery the same way again!
