DISH OF THE WEEK: The Butt at UNTAMED SANDWICHES

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

SADLY, UNTAMED SANDWICHES IS NOW CLOSED.

UNTAMED SANDWICHES, 43 West 39th Street (between Sixth and Fifth Avenue), Midtown West

Untamed Sandwiches was in the press quite a bit when they first opened back in January. In addition to being an exciting new opening for folks craving braised meat sandwiches in Midtown, there was also much talk about the size of their sandwiches being too small. One of the owners smartly responded to Robert Sietsema on Eater and proclaimed the sandwiches are now larger. Many food sites and commenters agreed or disagreed upon return.

I only got to try out their sandwiches after the promise of inflation. And I can say that they are certainly large enough for me.

The Butt at UNTAMED SANDWICHES

The untamed sandwich I chose was absolutely delicious and incredibly filling. It’s called The Butt and I was impressed with its balance of flavors and richness. It’s a smartly composed sandwich.

The Butt features sweet and smoky cider-braised pork butt which is packed with flavor and tender to the touch. It’s accompanied with broccoli rabe, pepper jelly, dijon mustard, and sharp cheddar held together by a crusty ciabatta bun . There was lots of tang, spice, some bitterness, hints of sweetness, and a bold meatiness. It was a hefty sandwich and one I’d highly recommend attempting to tame.
