#10 – HALLOWEEN SANDWICH at NO. 7 SUB SHOP

For the third year in a row, I’m going to attempt to eat every single item on Time Out New York’s annual 100 Best Dishes list. In no particular order, here’s my take on their Top 100. Let the gluttony continue…

Thanks to their Twitter promotion, it seems like many people are attempting to conquer the Time Out list this year. But it’s not easy and only the strong will survive.

And I will eat my hat (good thing I don’t wear one), if anybody has conquered the Halloween sandwich at No. 7 Sub Shop. It might have been the dish out of all the 100 that sounded the most delicious, but the problem is it’s no longer available and has not been since fall 2010.

I went in to the shop in hopes of getting a taste of this sandwich, which hosts braised short ribs, jalapeños, roasted sweet potatoes, and melted marshmallows. Delish, right? But the guy behind the register had no idea what I was talking about. He said a few people had been in asking for it, but it has not been on the menu since he started working there 8 months ago. I asked if it might make an appearance and he said the menu changes seasonally, but my guess is you will not see a sandwich named Halloween months after the fact. For the record, I attempted this feat back in October.

Since I’m not one to give up easily, I sent an email to No. 7 Sub pleading my case. I got a very nice email back explaining that since they’re constantly re-inventing dishes they have never brought a sandwich back to the menu. So the odds of trying this sandwich again are pretty slim.

I love every sandwich I’ve tried at No. 7 Sub shop (including the broccoli sandwich), but I’m so frustrated with the one that got away – it sounded like a good one.

  1. The Halloween sandwich does sound delicious! Too bad it’s been out of commission for such a long time. Hopefully it comes back around to this midtown west spot. We’d definitely be interested in giving it a try.
